Russia To Buy Drones From Israel

Fri Apr 10, 2009 4:24 pm

Russia to buy unmanned drones ( spyplanes ) from Israel. This is the first time Russia buys this type of equipment from Israel.

The contract is already signed, according to Interfax

No mention of how many as of now according to AFP

Norwegian newspaper Dagbladet quotes Interfax and AFP on this:

Thanks, but I don't read Norwegian, unfortunately. Does anyone know what types of UAVs are being purchased?

Nice article but it doesn't seem to bode well for the Russian aircraft industry that they haven't made their own by now.

Bigger picture for me is how long will it be before Israel's hostile neighbours benefit from this technology, if it is all about the money then short term Israel makes money, long term they stand to loose as the Russians learn and adapt the technology for their industry and export it to their allies.

Yes, it seems Israel is not being too smart about this. Russia is already saying the intent is to "study" the technology. From the BBC link above:

Quote:
He added that Russia wanted to study the technology of the drones in an effort to improve its own pilotless planes, which came under criticism during the Georgia conflict.

Israel may take in a few shekels now but will probably pay dearly for it later.

It makes no sense to me.

Well, Russia makes a lot of UAVs but want to improve. I guess that Georgia isn´t too happy about it, but they surely get all the information they want from their Israeli contacts.

Why would Israel sell this type of equipment to Russia, a country which seems to have ties to Iran, North Korea, and multiple other countries that these drones could be sold to and used against Israel. Just seems like a bad idea

Well, they did sell sensitive US radar technology to China, so what really is the difference? They appear to be doing whatever they think is in their best interest, neither Russia or China are any big friends of Israel, somehow I do not believe that bribery of technology will make much difference in who they choose to support or continue to support.
