It looks like our Air Force's major air assets are all going to be replaced. The new Herc's, new CH-147Fs, CH-148 Cyclone and the CC-17s are all top of the line equipment. We just need to pick a new small SAR aircraft and decide if we want the JSF. What to do with the Snowbirds is another big question that Canada needs to address soon.
I don't want to get all political here, but the recent investments into our armed forces is a refreshing change.

Nope, not really. It was originally 16 back in 2005, but the government changed, and they tacked on an additional C-130J, and specified that they wanted the stretched C-130J-30's. Primarily, the current fleet composes primarily of the shorter E's and H's, with only a handful of stretched H's. This leaves an opening for FWSAR, which will replace the current C-130H's and DHC-5's currently tasked with SAR duties with a brand new, twin engined aircraft.

I second that, it is about time our people get some modern equipment to help them get the job done.

When PWC's engine bid got stiffed for political reasons, that virtually guaranteed that Canada would not be a customer.
Never let the facts get in the way of a good story.

What about delivery timescales too?
Some of those old RCAF C-130's were just that, old and showing it.
Since Canada was brought a few C-17's, that covers the part of the airlift requirement the C-130J cannot do.
Again, this capability was needed quickly, supporting the Canadian effort in Afghanistan being a major factor.

Deliveries within 18 months, I'm fairly confident. This contract everyone knew was coming, there was some haggling about specialised kit and the usual American concerns about access to the a/c by non-Canadian born CF personnel (I wonder if that would include American-born CF personnel ?) But I'd bet that some of the parts were being manufactured before the contract was actually signed.
The 'E' models they can still get in the air are, IIRC, the oldest Hercs flying. Lockheed actually come to the CF for info on maintaining geriatric a/c.
Now all that's left to do is finalise the FWSAR (Fixed Wing Search and Rescue) a/c, and this will almost certainly be the C-27J Spartan. I don't think the NG Buffalo idea has a ghost of a chance.
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

Interesting to see that a platform originally designed in the late 1950s is still going strong. That's what can happen when a company actually takes the time to put the money into a design and get it right! Hopefully the USAF can get on board with more J models to relieve the Es that keep going strong.

Even earlier than that... the first ones flew in 1954, with the requirement issued in 1951.

Don't forget our 'special' relationship with the US Military; we have gotten the US to budge up and allocate some of their slots or production to us at times; C-17, M777 are one of many examples of this.
