I seriously doubt that F-35's will ever outnumber even just the Tranche 2 and 3 fleets however, they are only probably going to buy enough, eventually, for one carrier air group plus a smaller land based deployable force.

Agree. Despite the commonality I can see the UK only operating the F-35B. A significant additional F-35 purchase would probably be contingent on a requirement for both carriers being operational at the same time.

Quoting GDB (Reply 49):
enough to keep them viable for a couple of AD orientated units until around 2030.
It's a financial not a technical hurdle

A great idea. If the money was there do you know if the Tranche 1s are capable of being upgraded with the CAPTOR-E?

Not sure but it might not matter, just centralise the two AD Tranche 1 units at one base, likely in Scotland for the tasking.

No. The upgrade and modification costs would be prohibitive for the years left in service, plus many Tranche 1 Typhoons having just completed, are in or are about to enter their penultimate depth maintenance period. An upgrade would require a longer major servicing which the majority have already received their final.

Long story short, CAPTOR-E will only be seen on T3 birds in the future of which most if not all will be in storage until at least 2018.

How about some of the T1 birds replacing the hawks in the reds when they have to go?

(just my excitement for noise getting the best of me)

Considering the myriad of roles it's supposed to fulfill - cheap.

If it does indeed fulfil them....
