I'm actually reading a very good book on Area 51, and I'm just getting into the part of the book dealing with the A-12. The book is called Area 51: An Uncensored History of America's Top Secret Military Base, and it's by Annie Jacobsen. I strongly recommend it.

Quite a few reviews suggest otherwise

Dohhh!!!!!

Some of those reviews are down right brutal but they do point out the obvious flaws and takes any credibility away.

I heard about this book recently and looked it up at Amazon. Apparently the author advances the notion that the Roswell crash was a collaboration between Joseph Stalin and Dr Josef Mengele (Nazi of Auschwitz fame). Apparently Stalin launched a flying saucer from the USSR filled with Mengele's botched experiments and crashed it into New Mexico in an effort to scare Americans.

Seems like a pretty sound theory, makes way more sense than a weather balloon crash. Hopefully Annie Jacobsen can shed some light on the 9/11 coverup and Barack Obama's real birthplace.

I saw her plug it on the Daily Show. She made so many factual errors in a five minute interview I can't imagine what kind of crap she made up to fill an entire book. If you enjoy it, great, just remember to make sure it gets filed under fiction.

I haven't gotten that far yet. I'm on page 182, and the first reference to those two is almost 200 pages ahead of me (just searched the names on my Kindle).

I'm keeping an open mind until I finish the book.

There was a very interesting interview with the author of that book on NPR's "Fresh Air" about a month ago:

I found this article in the Telegraph while doing my world news review this morning.

Area 51: the plane truth
Many strange experiments have taken place at the ultra-secret base. But not on aliens. As former workers fight for their lives, we ask: what happened there?

What did not happen is this statement in the 13th paragraph of the Telegraph article!

Later stealth aircraft, including the B-2 bomber and the F-22 fighter, also flew test missions at Groom." Neither the B-2 ot the F-22 were "black programs". Their development and flight test program accomplished at Palmdale and Edwards.

The B-2 was quite "black". If not the published capabilities and the existence of the program, certainly the technical details were secret enough to keep it away from prying lenses for as long as possible.

Groom Lake is a very handy location for flight testing and weapons testing in general. It's remote enough you can make booms wihtout bothering people, secure enough you don't need to worry much about papparazzi and a.net kiddos, and no doubt has some of the most extensive range instrumentation and other testing and recording equipment in the world for your convenience.

Which combination of reasons is more than enough for governments to want to conduct flight testing and development work there

"Black" programs are programs that are not listed in the "budget". It has nothing to do with their security classification.

Example: The F-22 is a secret program, but it was a line item on the budget every year! The F-117 was a "black" program it was not even mentioned in the budget, until it was declassified.

yes, and for a period that applied to the B-2. I don't know if it still applied by the time it started flight testing.

No, the B-2's first flight was performed in public (I remember watching it on CNN) on 17 July, 1989.
