Fighterjets Over LHR Tonight

Sat Jan 21, 2012 9:05 pm

Whilst sitting at home just 10 mins ago have heard some very loud aircraft flying around the LHR area. After looking at Twitter seems like there alot of reports of Euro Fighters low in the area !

Any ideas anyone ??

I wonder if it's the same ones that flew over my apartment at speed and quite low (no more then 5,000ft), here in Cambridge. They were heading down towards London and unusually low considering their base is a significant distance away. I made a point of getting up and watching them because they were so loud.

Hmmm, they have not come over the airport. I know they are doing tests and stuff for the 2012 games, but its a Saturday night and the RAF boys dont like to fly on a weekend unless its something big?

Do you think it is training to do with the Olympics coming up? Was watching London Tonight yesterday or the day before I can't remember but there were Marines training on the Thames.

Could be in prepartion for the Olympics... a real test and on a Saturday evening a good way to check response times no? When they (crew) least expect it...

Yeah I was checking LHR Dep & Arrivals which seemed to be unaffected. If they didn't fly over the airport they were really close.

The military have been doing a lot of training just lately, fighters, AWACS and other military operations up and down the country for the last few weeks.

A mate in the RAF has said it's training and preparations for the olympics, so I guess we'll get a lot more of this going forward for the next few months.

True. I got this AWACS circling last last week - as you say, it moved around the country.

It was 2 Typhoons, according to my local paper, apparently they were supposed to be at 1000ft!!! Sounded like they were in my back garden, as i live half a mile from EGWU . Cant wait till july to see them land here to be based for the Olymipcs

There was an extensive police/military exercise in preparation for the games, on the Thames and it seems, in the air too.

I did wonder why the Typhoon activity was low over my house the last week or so. They've all buggered off to play in London.

Wouldn't they use the QRA aircraft and crews?

I would imagine the QRA aircraft and crews are needed in case anything should arise while the training is happening.

Let QRA north handle it?

Surely UK air defence doesn't rely on only 2 typhoons based in lincolnshie or the budget cuts that severe?

I understand what you're saying, but to take any aircraft/crew off a QRA to do a training flight is a no no in anyone's book.
The QRA exists for a reason and that's to make sure the airspace is protected around the UK......if anything shows up and 2 QRA Typhoons are away training, how well will that go down trying to send QRA jets from further afield or having to outfit jets to meet the role, all the while wasting valuable intercept time?

It's best to let the QRA aircraft and crews do their role, then swap them with training crews to make sure everyone is up to speed. Besides, i'm sure the government doesn't want fully armed aircraft flying training missions for the Olympics just yet.

Thank you for a well thought out discussion, makes a nice change instead of being shot down in flames.

I also didn't take into account that actual QRA aircraft might be armed with live ammo.

From what I have read about the recent proposed closure and sale of RAF Northolt, I believe that a couple of Typhoons will be based there for the duration of the games. Whether this is true is yet to be seen.

Regarding the AWACS circling overhead certain parts of the uk...

In my local paper an MOD spokesperson said it was a Belgian NATO AWACS circling at 33000ft, and in true local paper tradition they got a local eyewitness who said...

"I've never seen something so big circling so low"

Made me chuckle, how can nearly 6 miles up be classed as "low"
