Tue May 15, 2012 4:34 pm

The Norwegian government has decided to replace the almost new Hercules C-130J-30 that crashed at mountain Kebnekaise during Cold Response 2012.

Good. I think it's silly though that they don't order more of them ...

This was expected, I'm also surprised the Norwegian Airforce only had 4, 6 would be the minimum I think we should have.

The only reason I can think of is that Norway is part of a group of european countries that together also has access to a batch of C17's that they run jointly.

How often is a C17 in Norway. My brother in law travelled between Norway and Afghanistan in a Hercules.

Quit often actually. You can often see them at OSL anjd other airports in Norway ...in US Airforce livery or UK airforce livery

The C17 is proabably better put to use, carrieng equipment such as tanks, millitary vehicals etc.

Here isone at OSL:

Try US -> Afghanistan in a Herc. It's a multi day adventure that can, in a older Herc, turn into a multi week ordeal.

The article says the government is going to spend NOK720 million ($120MM) They could almost buy 3 at that price or was it for something else too?

Most likely from US Airforce or NATO.

Anyway, some news :

Norway is getting a new Hercules with help from good friends in the US Airforce. The U.S. Air Force allows Norway to take over and buy one of their new Hercules aircraft wich currently is being built for their airforce to replace the aircraft that crashed on Kebnekaise in March.

It normally takes two years to order and purchase a Hercules aircraft. Now, the Norwegian Air Force can thank their American colleagues that a brand new replacement airplane could be in place only six months after the tragic accident at Kebnekaise, where five Norwegian officers were killed. The plane can be replaced as early as September.

There is an outcry that Norway has to clean the mountain of the fuel and debris in Sweden currently. The green left wing is very strong here sadly.

To be honest I can't say I blame them, the Norwegians need to clean up the mess they made, it can't just be left there.
