Re: KC-46 Production, Testing And Delivery

Phase two receiver testing completed. The next phase of testing will be done by the USAF.

There is rumbling that Boeing is attempting to deliver the first tanker by the end of the year. Keep an eye/ear out for USAF acceptance fights.

There's an uptick in activity the past few days with lots of KC-46 flights to/from Moses Lake, all using different Boeing callsigns than the test frames. I'm seeing BOE20 en route from Kelly Field, and BOE 31 and 33 airborne now too. Something sure seems to be going on.

I'm assuming the Boeing flight numbers are the last 2 of the USAF serial numbers.

Someone need to camp at the Museum of Flight and see if the pilots are Boeing or USAF. If you see USAF personnel, then these could be customer acceptance flights prior to delivery. Specially if these are flown with different frames and the same flight pattern.

The KC-46A completed its Phase II receiver testing down at Edwards AFB earlier this week and this seems to be enough for the USAF to issue the Military Type Certificate which would allow deliveries, both now penciled in by the end of the month.

In other KC-46A news, Japan has signed for the second (of a planned four) KC-46A via Foreign Military Sale (FMS) contract. And another KC-46A flew to Ramstein AFB in Germany for it's first European visit.

I'm sure Boeing is more than ready for these tankers to leave the nest and head to their new homes :)

Some of them are doing acceptance flights now as their N sticker registrations have been removed and they're flying with their final military serial. There's a strong likelihood that we'll see some fly-aways this month.

Will these tankers get their tail codes before delivery or will the AF do that themselves when they arrive
at their new bases? ( OK= Tinker for ex)

I don't know but based on the Navy P8s I would bet that they won't get them until after arrival at their new homes.

Unlikely they get tail codes. I assume you meant tail flashes? If that is the case, then yes. They will likely get them once they arrive at their new bases.

Yes , tail flashes , that's what I meant

Thanks for the clarification :)

The test flights continues yesterday, with BOE 30 up and about. We've seen 5 or 6 different tails flying around BFI and MWH in the past week, including BOE462 (one of the development aircraft). Still no word on delivery.

If I was venture to guess, they will try very hard to make the first delivery by Friday to make the news cycle before everyone heads off for the Christmas break. They will continue to deliver as many frames as they can between Christmas and New Year even thought most of the rest of the company shuts down.
