Shipping by sea will always be cheaper. Although the cost of the fuel and the pilot is still peanuts compared to the cost of the aircraft, unless you are flushed with money, every little penny helps.

To mark the onset of serial production deliveries, Saab flew an eight-ship formation of test and serial Gripen Es for both Sweden and Brazil

I guess that a couple of Gripens must be close to getting on a ship heading for Brazil.

I was surprised to see that, according to Wiki, FAB has 5 Gripen in service. I wonder if 4 Gripen E were 'soft delivered' after November but have not yet been shipped ie FAB owns them but they are still in Sweden.

Sweden and Brazil will soon have a meeting regarding the military defense of some sort, Sweden needs the replacement of C-130H and Brazil wants more Gripen E.....golden opportunity for the KC-390 here. (only my opinion)

How soon does Sweden need to replace C-130? I thought Sweden decided to upgrade the fleet to last until about 2030. I could understand negotiating an agreement in principle for Sweden to order some KC-390 for delivery late this decade and for Brazil to order more Gripen for delivery sooner than that.

It seems to me that SAAB would welcome more Gripen E orders and that Embraer would be extremely pleased to get more KC-390 orders after the cutback in the number ordered for the FAB. In any event Brazil cannot wait very much longer to order more Gripen unless it wants the Brazilian production and/or assembly lines to go quiet after 2025 (all 36 Gripen E ordered were scheduled for delivery before 2025 according to the link below).

The original plan was to have the Hercs flying to 2030 after well-needed upgrades. From what I have heard, that hasn´t gone according to plan. Let's say that you want 6-8 KC-390 fully operational, we are well within that timeframe with a couple of years overlap, its time to make a decision

I guess that Brazil needs to order some more Gripen soon. If the C-130 update is causing problems, soon might be a good time to decide on ordering KC-390, too. Increased order quantities should result in a lower price, so both Embraer and SAAB products should become more competitive. OK, aircraft are costly but if you're going to buy them sometime anyway why not buy when the manufacturer badly needs more orders to get the unit cost down? KC-390/Gripen E offer a symbiotic gain, win/win for both countries, it seems to me.

I look forward to hearing what happens when the respective defence personnel meet up.

Neither order would significantly increase the build rate, just extend the line. In that case no real reduction in cost.

Mmmm... you think that the unit cost of producing 15 rather than 28 aircraft for FAB is the same? Subcontractors who agreed to a price of $x per unit for 28 units will accept the same $x per unit for 15 units? Same setup cost to recover over 15/28 of the original number of units. That = higher price to me.

Dude, you said it would reduce the cost if they order more. I said it won't unless the build rate increases. The build rate won't increase, they will just tack whatever frames they order on the end of the current rate, if they even order...

But to your last point, they don't order all 15 or 28 or whatever from the respective subcontractors at the same time. The orders are mostly placed yearly as they don't have the funding certainty, or available budgetary funding, to order more than on a yearly basis.

FAB wants 30 more F-39 - says head of air force in interview -

(Google translated)

The FAB (Brazilian Air Force) wants to buy another 30 Gripen fighters, almost doubling the fleet of 36 that are gradually arriving in the country. Meanwhile, he began to assemble the most modern and expensive arsenal of missiles that Brazil has ever had to equip the plane.

"Capacity-based planning takes us today, based on our employment assumptions, to 66 planes," Force commander Carlos de Almeida Baptista Junior told Folha.

The redesign reduces speculation of an ideal fleet of more than 120 aircraft, made since Brazil began discussing the acquisition of a new fighter in 2001.

https://www.defesanet.com.br/f39/notici ... as-Gripen/

I guess 'rethink' in the last para would be better a better translation than 'redesign'.

I wonder how things are progressing re: local production and assembly.

Two first operational Gripen of the Brazilian Air Force are delivered

Thu Apr 07, 2022 1:17 pm

Yesterday took off for the first time in Brazilian skies the first two series production F-39E Gripen fighters of the Brazilian Air Force. I share with you the largest and most complete report published on the arrival of fighter jets in Brazil, with tons of photos, maps, diagrams and much more, in addition to a lot of information.

Brazil now has 3 Gripen E in Brazil. According to the link below, the 2 delivered start April will be busy on certification work. Anyone know when F-39E is planned to enter serice with FAB? I guess that enough pilots, mechanics will have been trained over the years since the program was started.

At an FAB ceremonial day, Brazil's first 2 F-39 were declared operational. In addition...

(Google translated) 'The highlight of the celebration was the announcement made by the Air Force Commander, Air Lieutenant Brigadier Carlos de Almeida Baptista Junior of the acquisition of more F-39 Gripen units for the FAB.

“I thank the President of the Republic, Jair Messias Bolsonaro, for authorizing the contract for the acquisition of the F-39 Gripen aircraft to be amended in order to add four more aircraft..."

https://www.defesanet.com.br/f39/notici ... 9-Gripen-/

So, Gripen E contract number to rise from 36 to 40.

PS I wonder if Sweden will also firm up 10 extra Gripen E - mentioned as a possibility some years ago - in view of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

As well as announcing 4 extra jets are to be added to the original contract for 36, Lt-Brig Baptista Júnior also announced the launch of preliminary studies to acquire a second batch of Gripen aircraft. I wonder how many more and whether this will be the second of three orders or a large, final order..

Update on Gripen E production...

More than 30 Gripen Es are now in various stages of the production process. Saab last October stated that full-rate production would be achieved this year, but has not disclosed its annual output target.

A first example of the fighter to be completed in Brazil will enter final assembly next year.

Production of the 2 seater 'F' version was initiated with metal cutting in March 2020.

The 8 two seat Gripen F-39F for the Brazilian air force will no longer be produced in Brazil.

Translated from article:

The initial project predicted that the planes would be designed and assembled in Brazil, but under a new argument the eight fighters will be produced entirely in Sweden.

Baptista Jr [Commander of the air force] explained that the idea now is to promote the national production of the single seat version (F-39E), which allows more planes to be made in Brazil, with greater participation of other companies.

SAAB is celebrating another milestone in the Gripen program: the production of the first forward fuselage of the Gripen E fighter at its factory in Brazil. This is the most complex part being produced in the country and required effort and specialized knowledge from professionals to complete it.

The forward fuselage of the aircraft is the cell where the pilot sits. In it are installed the ejection seat, flight controls such as joystick and pedals, the canopy, the AESA radar, the cabin displays and all the aircraft's avionics.

The part was finished in the last week of October and will be sent to Sweden to compose the global supply chain for the production of the next fighters, since the structures produced in Brazil or in the headquarters are identical and can be installed in any Gripen aircraft.

I think that around 2016(?) the Swedish government pushed back delivery to SwAF by a year.

By the way, I recall that when the order for 60 Gripen E/F for SwAF was placed there was an option for 10 more. Has that been sunk by the retention and upgrading of the C/D fleet? I would have thought that with a war on in Ukraine and with Sweden joining NATO because of it, Sweden would be looking to enlarge its Gripen E fleet.

My understanding is that more 39E orders are coming, Sweden just needs to prioritise funding other mil spending in the interim. That is what the C/D retention allows for -- effectively an expansion of of the SwAF without additional spending in the near term, freeing up that money for other platforms/weapons/sensors.

Brazil ordered 36 Gripen E in 2014, 21 of which were to be assembled in Sweden.4 more aircraft were added to the order at a later date. The Brazilian production line has opened with orders for just 19 aircraft (I presume the 4 additional aircraft will be assembled in Brazil). Completion of delivery of the 36 in the original order is scheduled for 2027. Assuming a Brazilian production rate of 4-6 a year after initial ramp up, Brazil needs to place a further order soon to keep the line busy from 2027/2028 onwards, doesn't it?

I wonder also what chance Brazil has of winning an order from Colombia whose Kfir fighters need replacement. Negotiations with Dassault and SAAB were halted when funding expired a few months ago.

Sweden could do with a few airlifters to replace its C-130H fleet. Is Brazil perhaps hanging back on ordering more Gripen E in the hope of setting up a Gripen E/C-390 offset deal? I read in the link below that a recent attempt to buy used C-130 from Italy fell through.

I wonder how useful F-39 is to Brazil at the moment. Scheduled deliveries according to

https://www.defesanet.com.br/destaque/n ... eevaluate/

2022 04
2023 04
2024 03
2025 02 (plus 02 two seaters)
2026 06 (plus 04 two seaters)

How useful to an air force is such a small number of aircraft delivered over several years? More than 4 years from first delivery to getting enough for a squadron seems like a very long time to me.

Brazil plans to invest 52.8 billion reals (U.S. $10.6 billion) for research, development and equipment acquisition efforts for its military, including nearly doubling the size of its Gripen fighter fleet...

https://www.defensenews.com/global/the- ... nvestment/

It sounds like an order for another 30 or more will come in the not so distant future. That would roughly triple the number to be assembled in Brazil. I guess that would help in gaining any potential orders from South American countries. I wonder if a further Gripen deal might also be linked to a deal to supply KC-390 to the Swedish air force.

Brazil may increase its fleet of C-390 airlifters under a military investment programme tagged PAC.

Brazil plans to invest 52.8 billion reals (U.S. $10.6 billion) for research, development and equipment acquisition efforts for its military...

The minister also pointed to another program under PAC: the purchase of nine C-390 Millennium planes — initially known as KC-390 — produced by Embraer, along with the development of a refueling version of the model.

Brazil does not face any obvious short to medium term threats.
They need a fighter, never that many and tend to run them to the end of their effective lives, as with the Mirage 111’s and F-5E’s.

Nevertheless it looks like Lula wants to beef up the FAB, retiring 80+ F-5 and AMX, reducing combat jets in service to a single type. I imagine that operating a single type brings some cost advantages over operating three. Perhaps Gripen production costs in Brazil will also be lower than those in Sweden.

Saab and the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) have entered into an agreement regarding new functionalities and adjusted delivery schedules for the Gripen E and Gripen C/D. The agreement relates to the period 2023-2030...

I'm curious about the 'adjusted delivery schedules'. I hope this means that some deliveries destined for Brazil will be diverted to Sweden. That might make it easier for Sweden to release some Gripen C for use in Ukraine.

Wait? is Sweden ordering new build Gripen C/D for themselves? AAs far as I know the last 14 partially completed Gripen C/D airframes will be completed and delivered to the Philippines before the production line is shut down and Sweden will focus on the E model.

Did things change?

Russia invaded Ukraine, prompting Sweden to join NATO. You would think that would be a reason to increase its fighter force. If Philippines does not want the C/D's, might the SwAF take them? Another possibility would be to supply Ukraine with Gripen C. It would be the most suitable type for Ukraine conditions and, should the war end, for the Ukrainian air force post-war. Very unlikely perhaps, but producing enough Gripens for 4-6 squadrons would stand Ukraine in good stead for a decade or so. Armed with Meteor it could deal with Russian fighters. Armed with Taurus it could strike ground targets at long range.

It would be reassuring to Brazil if Gripen proved its worth in combat. Their Gripen E is even more able.

From an October 2021 SAAB press release...

Production of around 30 Gripen E aircraft are currently underway, which means that Saab has started manufacturing of close to one third of the fighters currently in the order backlog.

From a September 2023 SAAB press release...

Saab and the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) have entered into an agreement regarding new functionality and adjusted delivery schedules for Gripen E and Gripen C/D. The agreement relates to the period 2023-2030 and the order value is approximately SEK 5.8 billion.

If SAAB had 30 x Gripen E in production 2 years ago I wonder where they are. Perhaps they are held back to install the 'new functionality' before delivery, hence the change of delivery schedule mentioned? IIRC Brazil was due to receive 4 Gripen E from SAAB Sweden this year. 2 were delivered and shipped to Brazil. I have not heard of another 2 being delivered to Brazil.

Unless SAAB has slowed the pace of assembly, component manufacture and delivery of bought in parts (eg engines, ejection seats), there must be a lot of parts and components and/or possibly nearly completed airframes piling up in Linkoping. I guess that they are itching to get more kit out of the door.

Regarding the adjusted delivery schedule, it says that applies to Gripen C/D as well. I wonder if that means completion of those frames is on hold..

Two governments and two aircraft manufacturers from each country, Embraer and Saab, are negotiating a new procurement model. Delegations from both countries are at the stage of completing discussions regarding the mechanisms and agreements that will be reached.
On April 11, Embraer and Saab agreed to jointly offer the C-390 Millennium to the Swedish Air Force and possibly other countries, discuss options for integrating Saab technologies on the Brazilian airlifter, and collaborate on future fighter technologies.
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva received a delegation of Swedish authorities and businessmen on November 23.
According to local media, the delegation discussed Brazil's purchase of the second batch of F-39 Gripen fighter jets and the sale of the KC-390 multirole transport aircraft to the Swedish Air Force.

SAAB has quietly made some changes to the Gripen E wing design. That might explain the announcement that new functionality was being incorporated and the delivery schedule altered. I note that 4 frames were due to be delivered to Brazil this year but 2 are still outstanding.

Saab’s Johan Segertoft, head of the Gripen business unit, explained exactly why the changes had been made:

“At an early stage in the development process, an opportunity was identified to improve Gripen’s heavy load-carrying capabilities, as a clear benefit to future operations. A decision was made to implement this enhancement as quickly as possible. We have made updates to the software and some modifications affecting canard and elevon surfaces. These changes bring immediate benefits, prove our ability to reliably deliver growth, and consistently improve aircraft’s potential for the future.”

Since it appears that a decision to amend the wing for production aircraft was made in 2021 I imagine that the Brazil production plant will have been alerted in time to start production using the revised wing design. In the linked article with a plan view with one side old design, one side new, the change is obvious.
