FAF A400M Hot & Low In Djibouti

Tue Feb 18, 2014 8:29 am

A French Air Force A400M was deployed to Djibouti this weekend, flying around 20FH in a hot and low environment.
This is the first time the French Air Force have used the aircraft at the reported maximum take-off weight (141 tonnes) on a flight over 3,000nm in hot conditions.

The aircraft flew a 90min low level tactical mission out in Djibouti and performed several steep approaches but did not land on any unprepared surface.

The tactical mission was flown with 30 personnel in the cargo hold to evaluate the level of comfort/discomfort during those flight phases, the article (in french) suggests that not all were able to fill in theri feedback questionnaires immediately after landing  http://lemamouth.blogspot.fr/2014/02...ns-la-peau-de-latlas-djibouti.html

Flying military aircraft at low altitudes in hot weather is not a "comfortable experience". Most military aircraft do not have air conditioning.

The A400M has an air conditioned cargo hold, which is definitely an improvement versus the C160 and C130 the FAF operate... However a low-level tactical mission will indeed never be a comfortable experience!
