The F-15C was flying at high altitude, between FL-300 and FL-400 according to news reports. The Pilot declared an emergency with ARTCC and then radio contact was lost. He is reported as an experienced pilot in the F-15 and with the MAANG. The wreckage has been located and is reported as a "deep hole in the ground" with widely scattered debris. It is unknown if the pilot punched out, or not, he has not been found. Search efforts went on all day yesterday, since the time of the crash but was suspended at midnight. The search resumed today. But last night, around 0300L (0700Z) a NYANG HC-130N (106th RW) joined the search, using its infrared equipment and the unit's HH-60G with PJ's aboard. The HC-130 has been refueled by a NHANG KC-135R and more ANG, USCG, Army, and USAF assets will be used in the search and rescue until he is found and rescued, or recovered.

I am happy to see the large effort being expended to locate the pilot. That should be a consolation for all American airmen that they will not be forgotten in the event of trajedy.

Sadly, it was reported that the pilot was confirmed dead. No other details on the news outlets but a press conference was scheduled for 9nd pm ET. Condolences to his family and friends and thank you to the pilot for his/herservice in helping keeping us all safe....

Yes, the wing commander said that they found evidence that the ejection seat never left the aircraft. Here is a story from FOX News:

My guess is, and this is only a guess, is the F-15 began to break-up at high altitude for whatever reason. It was not doing any high G maneuvering. Nor does there seem to be an attempt to turn towards the closest emergency airfield, which would have been either Langley AFB, or NAS Norfolk, both in VA and both far enough away for a easy controlled decent, about 100 nm.
However, the most likely event is the pilot somehow became incapacitated. Maybe oxygen, or an illness that developed inflight?

There is no evidence of a break-up. Closest airfield to land would have been either D.C. or Richmond. In Hampton Roads he would have used Langley (Primary) or Oceana NAS (Alt). Norfolk NAS is out. I suspect an ECS failure at altitude and failure to go to emergency O2.

That's what I was thinking too, wouldn't be the first time either. Question though, why would NAS Norfolk be out, they have A-gear.
