Not a good scenario for the pilot. I hope he's not a foot shorter when he's repatriated.

well, anything else than hoping for a quick death would unfortunately be a xmas miracle I think.
Those ISIS people need another name than "terrorist", the word is too good for them.

Yes, that makes total sense, killing thousands of innocents to punish a few idiots.

I feel so bad for this pilot. I hope for a miracle here. If they harm him, I hope that the retaliation will be enormous. I could never imagine the fear this poor man is experiencing. Even better would be a rescue.

What kind of weapon does it take to bring down an F-16? There are a few airlines still overflying Syria and Iraq, I hope that we don't see another MH17.

I don't believe ISIS has any advanced AA weaponry. MANPADS are crude and can get the job done but there are serious limitations to them that an F-16 could easily exploit. I highly doubt ISIS did it... without bringing MH17 politics into the thread, whoever operated the BUK had to have had some sort of advanced training. You just can't hop in one and shoot things down

the Question is? Was he shot down or was it an Engine Failure that Brought him Down??

Centcom claims it wasn't shot down. I tend to think they have some good intel on this (such as radio coms of the pilot saying "oh crap, my engine just quit").

As for SAMs: ISIS/FSA back early in the war were seen overrunning SA-2/3/5 sites, but they tended to destroy everything. The most complex system I've seen in use so far is an SA-8 launcher from one of the various rebel groups (Liwa al tawleed I think) but who knows if they defected to ISIS yet.

If that F-16 was down in SA-14 or FN-6 engagement altitudes, there was something seriously wrong.

And your point is ?

While ISIS commits atrocities daily it doesn't mean that we should do the same, using nuclear weapons against them is ridiculous, abhorrent and would result in thousands of innocent lives lost.

Well, its not exactly that Centcom, or US forces in general, like to admit to any US build aircraft being shot down by anyone ever. Unless they absolutely positively have to admit it, it will always be an accident.

It is also possible that you have a mix of reasons, like engine trouble bringing it down enough to be hit by a manpad/AAA or that the Pilot went to low for a BDA and got hit .... the L/D of the F-16 ain´t all that bad (~9 at Mach 0.9, ~8 at Mach 0.6) and from a manpad safe altitude it should be able to glide a fair distance.
