RE: Argentina To Lease Sukhoi Su-24s

Mon Jan 26, 2015 3:52 pm

If it was decided that Argentina was beginning to increase the threat towards the Falkland Islands, I imagine that this scenario would already have been the subject of meticulous planning by the UK. I suspect that it wouldn't take very long for the UK armed forces, and specifically the RAF, to beef up the defences down south.

Would it be necessary to move an E3 Sentry to the area, at least as far as Ascension Island, or are current early warning arrangements down there sufficient?

For the Argentinian Government, they can pretend to do something to enhance their capabilities. So I understand that they take them for propaganda, if they get them for wheet and beef, may pay out for them.

How desperate must Putin be, and the situation of the economy in Russia, that they need this food and cannot pay for it?

Well Argentina could've sold that wheat/beef for $$$ on the world market, so in effect it has cost them money to 'lease' the aircraft.

There are currently sanctions (including agricultural ones) on Russia, so by doing this trade with Argentina they can mitigate some of the sanctions. Whilst The economy is pretty weak, it is not as if it has run out of money to pay for things.

Except HAS's don't really provide any tangible protection anymore...The USAF proved that during the 91 gulf war.

The Kuwaiti's as still suing the French companies that built the ones we had to blow up to get the Iraqi's out of them.

Except that anything capable of dropping a precision guided munition (SU24 or other) isn't going to get anywhere near enough.....

But they would still provide an element of protection from ground fire from a special forces raid (which was what the post was referring to.)

Here's something that may be affordable and certainly more updated.....

http://www.defensenews.com/story/def...s-france-mirage-fighters/21856393/

Quote:
"'During discussions, the UAE offered a batch of upgraded Mirage 2000-9s to Iraq, they are expected to be under 10 aircraft,' the source added.

The UAE has 36 multirole Mirage 2000 fighters that have been in service since 1986, 30 of which have been extensively refurbished and then upgraded to the same standard as the newer fleet of 32 Mirage 2000-9s delivered starting in 2003 by France's Dassault Aviation."

True but only after total air superiority had been achieved. Which happened far sooner than had been anticipated.
The Iraqi AF did not put up much of a fight, given the sheer size and technology advantage of the forces ranged against it maybe not so surprising in hindsight.
Plus the large ECM/SEAD capability neutralised enough of the SAM's to allow coalition aircraft to loiter around guiding those LGB's on to the shelters and to do this with again a much lower attrition rate than had been feared.

And before meaningful ways to actively defend against pgm, which has become a prime consideration for shorad. When you start shooting at those 2000 pound LGB, you better have some protection against shrapnel and debris for your aircraft.

Note in 1991 only a small number of the total force were equipped with LGBs. From a US perspective F-117, F-111 and A-6E were the primary LGB capable aircraft with the A-6E reportedly conducting few LGB strikes. PGMs comprised only about 9% of all weapons expended during GW1 compared to 29% in Kosovo and almost 60% during GW2.
