Number 5 of the multinational tanker pool has landed at Eindhoven AB. The Dutch-register is T-058.

Image

This will be the last Dutch registered example, the remainder will be based in Germay.

From the linked article:

One of the 8 aircraft remains available in a medical transport configuration so that there is no delay in converting the aircraft.

This surprised me, although I see the logic behind it of course. How long would it approximately take to convert one aircraft to medical transport? I guess the aircraft itself will be used for refueling training missions?

"This will be the last Dutch registered example, the remainder will be based in Germany."

Please note that all 9 (not 8) will be Dutch registered, not just the first 5. For example T-059 (cn 1982) and T-060 (cn 1989) are already in production. Plus several of the delivered ones are already based at Cologne-Bonn. On any given day one can see 1, 2 or even 3 at Cologne-Bonn, typically T-054/055/056. Keep in mind it is a Multinational MRTT Unit so somewhat similar to the C-17s of the Strategic Airlift Capability (with Hungarian serials/roundels) and to lesser extend like NATO's E-3s (with Luxembourg regs/insignia).
cheers

The contract for three additional A330MRTT for the Spanish air force was signed a few days ago. These are conversions from used aircraft. The intent to acquire these aircraft was announced earlier this year already. The press release is a bit confusing but it appears that these will be delivered (as MRTT, post-conversion) between 2023 and 2025.

The fact that Airbus is able to convert used aircraft into tankers makes their product more appealing

Thanks.

Various sites are suggesting that 2022 won't be an MRTT but a standard 332. (Who knows?)

It is is suggested that 2030 will also be an MRTT for MMF.

Then we have the conversions for the air forces of Spain, Brazil and now Canada. It's hard to keep up!

MSN2022 is definitely RR powered. Nor, I believe is it an MRTT, rather destined as a troop transport. If I recall correctly the French Air Force ordered 3 A330-200s a while back, two of which were second hand (ex Avianca??)

I had sort of assumed that the used frames would be converted to MRTTs but it seems they need 3 vanilla transport frames alongside their MRTTs

These 3 French A330-200 were ordered to replace 2 A340-200 and 2 A310 of the Escadron de transport 3/60 Esterel (logistics squadron). The two first ones were delivered in 2020 (MSN 1608 & MSN 1657).

As per french news, these 3 A330-200 are supposed to be converted into MRTT in 2026.

A330-800 based MRTT is in the plans now, due circa 2026:

The A330neo will soon get some of the same upgrades the A350 has got as part of the New Production Standard. This includes optimized low-speed performance, enhanced take-off configurations, and quicker gear retraction. These are software upgrades only that have proven themselves on the newest A350s. Incremental developments will be coming, with Airbus planning a Multirole Tanker version of the A330-800 in 2026 as a replacement for the existing A330-200.

Interesting. Especially as my understanding is they made use of the mounting points for the A340 engines for the hose pods. Hardly insurmountable but still extra work if they want to do the same on the NEO wing that had all that stuff removed.

Maybe NZ might stump up for a couple. _hopes_

From previous discussion I recall that the shape and size of the engines had a bearing on the aerodynamics of the boom, so work required there also. I am surprised at this news unless there is to be a US order to justify the investment spend.

I presume Airbus feels there are enough future orders from other countries in the pipeline to justify it.

Does anyone know the ratio of new-build A330MRTTs to conversions of former passenger frames?

Airbus wants to be in the tanker business for the long term. They have no choice but to adapt it to the next platform if they want to stay in that market as the 330CEO production is now being shut down.

And an additional 4 from used frames. The 9th may not be converted and be reserved for only VVIP use.

Airbus has signed a contract to enhance France's MRTT fleet:

"The programme will convert the French A330 MRTT into a high bandwidth communication relay node, with the aim of being connected in all circumstances, including jammed environments and extreme weather conditions, Airbus said."

More specificity about replacing the current model with one derived from the A330neo

"Airbus has begun de-risking work to develop a second-generation Multi-Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) version based on its A330neo.

The efforts underway are geared to paving the way for the OEM to transition from the existing A330-200ceo model to the reengined, re-winged A330neo, potentially by the turn of the decade.

The technical details are interesting. It seems almost more interesting to just re-engine the A330-200 without using the new wing.

Does the A330-200 have the A340 derived wing originally made for 4 engines?

Yes, as explained in the article A330 and A340 have the same wing and associated provisions for the outer engines.

Very interesting, guess this is a crazy thought but could one then "make" a A330 out of A340 by taking off the 4 hairdryers and putting 2 standard 330 engines under it??? Since A340s have been phased out en masse without that 'modification' I guess this is impossible but just wondered....

A snippet at the bottom of an article about the C295 indicates some potential for new MRTTs or converted A330s for India.

"At the same time, India is launching a tender for six tanker aircraft. In addition to new multi-purpose tankers from Airbus or Boeing, the Ministry of Defense also wants to look for suitable equipment on the second-hand market."

Airbus needs a lead customer for the mooted A330-800 - based MRTT.

First I have heard of that, there has been concern from Germany about a new Saudi Typhoon order but I understand that is being discussed rather than outright blocked.
They did not object to the previous Typhoon order, nor prior to that the Tornados.
Back in the 70’s, West Germany had a similar policy, so how did all those G3 rifles end up in Saudi service? They had a UK plant at the time is how!
