A vintage WWII fighter plane crashed into the Hudson River Friday night.
A P-47 Thunderbolt fighter plane went down in the river near the Intrepid Museum at around 7:30 p.m. near 46th Street, according to law enforcement sources.
“I was down by my building and I saw the airplane circle around a couple of times,” witness Frank Pijuan said.
“And then it disappeared.”
Aviation and harbor units were responding to the scene.
Police say there’s at least one survivor in the water.[Edited 2016-05-27 18:07:37]

It appears that 3 may have been on the plane, it had engine trouble, was flying with 2 other vintage aircraft. The flyover is part of 'Fleet Week' celebrations in NYC. Apparently the 3 aircraft flew out an airport on Long Island. Apparently the plane crashed closer to the New Jersey side of the river.

The pilot has survived and brought to a hospital. Authorities are still not sure, but don't believe anyone else on the plane. The planes flew out of Republic Airport, the remaining 2 returned there.

RIP Bill Gordon. Very sad when one of these old warbirds goes down and takes her pilot with her.

ONE helicopter following them to do promotional photography
FOR the Jones Beach Airshow this weekend
Landed near Jersey side of the Hudson, in view of Edgewater restaurants and such on the banks of the river.
Witnesses say pilot tried to get out and got the canopy partially open but the thing then sank.
Divers confirmed canopy was partially-open, reached in, and pulled the deceased pilot out by grabbing his foot.
Swimmer in water was/may-have-been good Samaritan trying to help; he's fine.
Pilot was 25-years-experienced airshow pilot who recently moved to Key West.
Very sad.

Any idea which '47 it was? I'm a particular fan of the Jug and probably know the plane that went in. Prayers for the family and friends of the aircraft pilot.

It was "Jackys Revenge", based out of the American Airpower Museum, Republic/Farmingdale Airport, Farmingdale, NY.

An initial examination of the wreckage revealed that the airframe was generally intact. The engine remained attached to the
airframe. A cursory examination of the engine revealed that the number 18 cylinder on the Pratt and Whitney R-2800 radial engine
was damaged, consistent with an in-flight occurrence. Oil was present on the exterior of the engine.
