A restored Norwegian Starfighter CF-104 took off for the first time in 33 years today

It has been described as "The Widowmaker" and described as a rocket with wings. The F-104 Starfighter was perhaps the main weapon in Norway during the Cold War, and today the fighter again take off at Bodø Main Air Station.

A volunteer gang has spent the last 13 years to make the airplane able to fly again. When making a comeback in the air for the first time in 33 years in Europe, it is with F16 pilot Eskil Amdal the controls.

This is will be the only flyable Starfighter in Norway today

Two videos and several pictures here:

Quite a sight. A dedicated group and a brave pilot for sure. I enjoyed the video and the story.

Restoring one of these 'modern' jet fighters is quite challenging, let alone making it airworthy again.
Well done to the team.
We could do with more airworthy Starfighters, they're quite a machine.

Even more difficult is getting permission to fly it, especially if its a civilian restoration - luckily, it looks like this one is operated under the auspices of the Norwegian airforce, so they won't have the same hurdles if they want to display it at places like RIAT.

Its a shame the RAF isn't funded to provide a broader range of heritage aircraft through the BBMF, as many British cold war jets would be amazing to see back in the air, just like this one.

Kudos to the Norwegian airforce and the civilian restorers!

From article below ( Includes video taken from the following F-16 )

" Wanted abroad

The test flight has attracted attention abroad and the airplane is on the wish-list of air shows in Europe. But getting the airplane booked is easier said than done.

- We're going to continue to work to get a little more permanent certifications. There I expect that we get, but initially coming this aircraft is to operate out of Bodø to the extent we should fly it.

There is also a need for permission from the United States, if the plane is to fly outside Norwegian air space.

- Now we are entering a new phase of operations. We will keep this plane in order like a normal aircraft. We have got it up to the level needed technically and now it's a common plane. "

I believe it's a civilian restoration only. Don't believe the air force is involved

That settles the vacation plans for next year. Hopefully It will come to Sola Airshow, It is a tiny bit closer to me than Andøya airport.
Are there any other projects on the way in Norway? I am glad to see something is one to preserve old military jets on this side of the Atlantic, althouh we are spoiled in Scandinavia already with the Swedish Air Force Historic Flight.

I cannot wait to experience the Starfighter in the air.
