Thu Jun 15, 2017 4:55 am

Looks like Qatar is the next F-15 customer. 36 aircraft for $12 billion.

So let's summ it up:
- President Trump selles billions of $ of weapons to KSA
- KSA initiates a diplomatic and economic ban on neighbouring Qatar, citing 'support of terrorism'
- President Trump begs for de-escalation but also reprimands Qatar, citing 'support of terrorism'
- Qatar buys billions of $ of US weapons

So what? Either Qatar supports terror groups and should be treated accordingly, or not. We all know what a joke this accusation is, or rather that this is the pot calling the kettle black, but what I see from my side of the pond (France, a country both heavily involved in battlefield war against terror groups (Mali) and suffering from many terror attacks during the last 3 years), is a new level of hypocrisy from fellow USA. I'm afraid sooner rather than later, we'll pay a very heavy price for our blindness or short-sighted focus on business and $$$...

In this case it's not only the US though. Qatar also has Dassault Rafales on order.

You are absolutely right. For about 10 years France seems to have a kind of facination for all things Qatar. They buy, we sell... Sigh...

Not sure what Trump has to do with every single US arms sale....

As a point of fact, it was the Obama administration that requested the sale of the F-15s and it has taken Congress a number of years to approve the sale.

I don't really see an issue with the sale of highly technical equipment. Most middle east nations are highly dependant on contractor and OEM support and these military purchases become non functional very quickily which said support is withdrawn.

I have more of an issue with the military ground equipment taken such as the large stocks of tanks and AFVs. Less technical so easier to maintain locally and procure external support from mulitple vendors while more likely to be used to suppress local populations.

Hypocrisy yes. Politics as usual yes. At least in the USA the hypocrisy is usually backed by a free election (although easily manipulated):)

No. The point I was addressing was the overall policy of our governments to bomb terrorists in the Middle East, while shaking hands with their financiers and offering them the latest collection of jets, bombs and missiles. Doesn't really matter if it's Rafales to Qatar or more F-15s to Saudi, as long as the multi-billion dollar arms sales dictate which terrorists to fight and which to ignore we will never be rid of the problem.

Must be why the Iranian F-4, F-5, F-14, C-130, H-1 etc.. are all still flying decades after support was withdrawn :-)

Well thank god that this dispute between Qatar and the KSA certainly doesn't push Qatar into the arms of Iran then... :duck:

There's a difference: during the time of the Shah, Iran was working on developing its own domestic aviation and arms industries right up to the Revolution. When the Revolution happened, Iran was already fairly well developed in terms of its capabilities in overhauling aircraft and building weapons.

Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE, etc don't have nearly the same level of development in terms of their domestic capabilities. They are all heavily dependent on external contractors to support their hardware.

The US was supposed to support us in the fight against ISIS in North Africa but apparently the manbaby in chief took umbrage of his handshake with president Macron and is not paying anymore...

I guess that his promise regarding ISIS is already void anyway so why bother ?

Reasonably quick delivery for Qatar with the first jet expected in early 2019. No surprise on basing at Al Udeid either given the concentration of US airpower there it should be a smooth transition for the Qatari Air Force onto the jet.

Qatar to receive first F-15QAs in early 2019

The first of 36 Boeing F-15QA multirole fighters ordered by Qatar will arrive in the emirate in early 2019, Brigadier General Eisa al-Mohannadi, the Qatari Emiri Air Force (QEAF) officer heading the programme, told journalists during a press trip to Al-Udeid Air Base on 26 November.

"The aircraft deliveries to Qatar [will] begin in early 2021 and will be continued through late 2022, when all 36 aircraft will be in-country," Gen Eisa said. The first delivery will consist of six F-15QAs and the entire fleet will be fully operational by 2023, he added.

The F-15QA, the Qatari version of the F-15E Advanced Eagle, will be known as the Ababil in QAEF service and will be based at Al-Udeid.

Gen Eisa said the QAEF selected the type as it has the longest unrefuelled range and heaviest payload of the aircraft considered for the requirement, and that its climb rate, cruise speed, and dash speed are "world class". Combined with the available weapons, these capabilities enable the aircraft to defend Qatar from air, land, and maritime threats, he added, also noting that the type is fully interoperable with the US Air Force (USAF).

Contradictory dates!
So is it 2019 or 2021?

Just a thought but it may be that the first aircraft will be delivered to Qatar but the aircraft and aircrew will remain in the US training until 2021?

Al Udeid is large enough to swallow them all but I doubt they will all be based there. Perhaps the Rafales will replace the Mirage 2000s at Doha International (are they still there?).

It is pretty incredible given the Qatar Air Force will go from 9 Mirage 2000s to 96 modern 4.5gen fighters in less than 6 years. I'm not sure where the aircrew are coming from and I expect proficiency will take a lot longer.
