Buenos Aires Airports to be under heavy operational restrictions during G20 Meeting

Fri Jul 27, 2018 3:38 pm

It was informed yesterday that during the G20 meeting to be held in Buenos Aires, Nov 29 - Dec 2, AEP and EPA will be closed completely to all operations and EZE will not be handling any general aviation or cargo flights. Additionally, only one runway (11-29) will be operational during those dates. Airspace over the city will be closed. NOTAMs were published yesterday.

That seems fairly reasonable given the amount of extra traffic that should be expected and the respective security requirements. We also had quite a few restrictions at HAM last time but I would imagine that this is far worse for Buenos Aires as a city than it was for HAM with BRE, TXL, SXF and HAJ right around the corner. Anyway, anyone in town will hopefully have the same great time spotting we had during G20.

It appears the city government will declare Nov 30th a bank holiday; since it is a Friday a good number of people will head south to the coast. Weather should be reasonably warm by then for some beach time.

As the city is being prepared for the G20 i’m wondering how they will accommodate all the official aircraft at Aeroparque. The airport is pretty small, there’s not much space and RWY 13/31 is only 2.100m long.
Today’s edition of argentina’s “La Nacion” is reporting that all participants aircraft will operate in Aeroparque. Makes me think how they will do that. Where will they park Air Force One? Is 2.100m of runway even enough for safety requirements?

For those who speak spanish here’s the link: https://www.lanacion.com.ar/2186222-una-ciudad-blindada-asi-sera-seguridad-durante

Info is not correct. Most aircraft will operate from EZE and one of the runways is being closed down so all aircraft can be parked there. EPA may absorb some of the visiting planes too; in fact a few USAF C-17s were there yesterday. AEP and SADF will be closed for good on Nov. 30/Dec 1 and EPA only open to military traffic.

The city will be shut down pretty much, all suburban trains and subway lines will be closed for two days, and the bus lines heavily restricted. Some airlines are cancelling their international flights on 30/11 and 1/12 as getting to EZE may be complicated due to traffic restrictions. The airspace over the city will be closed and the government has declared Nov 30th a bank holiday; Ms. Patricia Bullrich, Security Minister, suggested and encouraged those that are able to leave the city for a long weekend to do so: country homes. beach condos, etc.

Turns out some of the presidents/dignitaries are indeed arriving @ AEP, on account of them flying in smaller planes. The President of Italy (A319) and the President of Rwanda (Gulfstream) arrived there. The rest are all arriving @ EZE.

Most of the support planes (many C-17s, IL-76s, A-400s) are being flown for the weekend to MDZ, BHI, EPA, Moron Air Base SADM, ASU and MVD.

Ezeiza features a nice line-up of 747's today. Alongside LH's daily 748 you can see 747's from Saudia, Air India and South Korea already. Turkey's president Erdogan has also arrived with his new toy:

XI Jinping's 747-8 is on its way from MAD, together with a 747-400 as well.

LGAviation refers to a great time spotting.

Not sure how much the various security agencies will seek to limit this.

Also not clear what non G20 traffic will be possible into Buenos Aires or the extent that normal ground transportation restrictions will apply.

Not to forget Mr. Trump’s ride is on its way, too.

According to “Spiegel online” she will be flying to Madrid with German Air Force to catch the regular Iberia flight to EZE (IB6849) tomorrow.

Just read the same on Twitter. Poor Ms. Merkel. Bit embarrassing. Good ol' Iberia to the rescue.

And here is Xi Jinping's plane on approach to EZE a few hours ago.

And in preparation for the arrival of Air Force One, USAF KC-10A Extender 84-0185 completed an in flight refuel of an E-3G Sentry that has been flying for a while over the ocean south east of EZE.

Chancellor's new flight. Doesn't the German Air Force have a backup plane so she didn't have to fly on a regular IB flight?

Yes, they have an identical back up aircraft, another A343, that was even flown into Cologne last night to pick her up. Problem was duty time for both crews. After landing in Cologne brakes had to cool down because only the shorter runway was available, so she had to stay on board for a while longer. Meanwhile both crews, the original and the standby crew that flew the second aircraft, would have been over duty time if they performed the flight to EZE. So finally Mrs. Merkel stayed at a hotel to catch the IB flight today.

They had.
But the standby crew of the standby aircraft went out of remaining duty time (as the first operational crew).
There was simply no crew left to fly the other A340.

Edit: the retro 747-8 was quicker in answering.
Happy Landings

Makes sense, thanks for that. Just really strange seeing the leader of country on a commercial flight!
