Brexit Leads U.K. to Quit Galileo

Wed Dec 05, 2018 1:19 am

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles ... se-program says:

Airbus SE blamed the European Union for the U.K.’s decision to quit the Galileo satellite-defense program, after the country was denied a central role in the 10 billion-euro ($11 billion) project after Brexit.

The move will deal a “serious blow to the EU’s common security and defense ambition,” Chief Executive Officer Tom Enders said in an Airbus Twitter post. Airbus’s U.K. arm has carried out extensive work on Galileo since its inception and Britain has plowed 1.2 billion pounds ($1.5 billion) into the system’s development.

...

Britain said on Saturday it won’t use Galileo for defense or critical infrastructure applications, and will instead develop its own system to guide military drones, run energy networks and provide location services for civilian cellphones. It will also continue to access the U.S. Global Positioning System, which Galileo aims to rival when fully operational in 2026.

So if it took USD 1.5B to develop just part of Galileo, how much is the UK-only system really going to cost, and is any of the earlier Galileo work going to be reusable?

TFA also says:

Prime Minister Theresa May earlier this year announced a 92 million-pound, 18-month program to design and develop Britain’s own satellite navigation system, possibly via the so-called Five Eyes intelligence-sharing alliance with the U.S., Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

Britain has also committed 2 billion pounds to funding a concept fighter plane after France and Germany indicated it could be excluded from one being developed by Airbus and France’s Dassault Aviation SA. Airbus later sought to downplay that possibility, saying a combat jet built without British defense giant BAE Systems Plc wouldn’t be as good.

How are you going to get a whole new satnav system for GBP 92M / USD 118M when USD 1.5B only bought part of Galileo?
Wake up to find out that you are the eyes of the world

Wake now, discover that you are the song that the morning brings
The heart has it's seasons, it's evenings and songs of it's own

Yeah, not possible. My geuss is that GBP 92M will pay for something like a British copy of the US ground based WAAS - Wide Area Augmentation System. Covering the United Kingdom instead of North America it might - combined with the US space based part of the GPS system - offer much the same advantages for the UK as Galileo.

Or it leads to a hand full of satellites like the Japanese QZSS.

If a hard Brexit takes place GB will like other technology oriented countries will be making bi-lateral agreements and commitments. But first ALL current mutual programs are defined, mediated, financed via EU. Almost by definition GB is out. Later, even with a hard Brexit I expect GB will be joining an any number of EU projects not excluding Galileo.

QZSS cost 170 billion Yen, i. e. about US$ 1.5 billion. Not cheap at all.

Relatively cheap.... that is less than what they paid for their share of Galileo.

Maybe the US is dangling some "GPS sharing" in their face?

I do find this quite amusing as this is happening due to the UK pushing for a clause in the Galileo program to lockout any non EU countries from the high accuracy component. If it weren't for that they could have remained a part of the program even outside of the EU.

One of many things the UK has to deal with, once outside the EU. 1,5bn down the drain because of Brexit. Ah well, looks like Brexit might not happen after all, but there is another thread about that in non-aviation.
Many happy landings, greetings from The Netherlands!
