B-47 Crew Chief?

Sun Dec 16, 2018 12:50 pm

Afternoon All

Does anyone know where the Crew Chief sat on the B-47. Did he have an ejector seat or did he have to jump out of the hatch in an emergency?

He didn’t seat anywhere other than the hangar, they didn’t fly.

Didn’t the B-47 have a cargo/tool pannier for the bomb bay? CC might have had a seat there... :-)

A friend of mine was a B-47 crew chief and I recall him telling me he occassionally flew with the airplane. Didn't say where he sat, but he did fly.

Doesn’t look likely from the pictures I’ve seen. I feel bad for the EWOs on that plane! “The three electronic warfare officers (EWOs), also known as “Ravens” or “Crows,” were stationed in what would be the bomb bay in a normal B-47. On typical missions, the EWOs spent about 12-14 hours working in this confined, windowless compartment, completely surrounded by electronic equipment” https://www.nationalmuseum.af.mil/Visit ... stratojet/

Contacted me friend and was told that he sat where there were two steps, below and to the left of the co-pilot's station, in line with the rudder pedals. Said he flew as often as he could, had to get his 4 hours flight time per month in order to draw flight pay. Apparently crew chiefs accompanied the crew when they went TDY. No, there was no means for the crew chief to get out in an emergency in flight other than going out the crew door or through the bomb bay.

Evening All

Thanks everyone for the reply's, seems a confined area for a Crew Chief to sit for hours. I wonder if the Crew Chiefs on the B-52 fare better?
