An update on the cargo locks issue,

KC-46 cargo solution still ‘months’ away

The U.S. Air Force expects to resolve a safety issue with the cargo capability of its KC-46A Pegasus tanker within “months,” the service’s top acquisition official said Tuesday.

Will Roper said he is “confident” the issue would get fixed and that the problem,— which has led the Air Force to stop the tankers from flying with cargo in their holds — was not his top concern for the Boeing-made plane.

“The issue with the locks was identified. We’re working options currently with Boeing and their supplier,” Roper said at a breakfast hosted by the Defense Writers Group. “We’re looking to our operators to tell us which one of the solutions that have been identified is the one that they prefer."

Roper said the cargo issue “goes into the kind of normal deficiency space” and noted that it’s the type of issue that is discovered by the normal testing process. The more long-term issues, such as the remote visual system, are “the areas I keep the most focus on,” he said.

Looks like the cargo hook issue isn’t going to be a quick fix but it also isn’t high on the list of concerns for the USAF compared to the other category one deficiencies.

The U.S. Air Force has approved a retrofit to prevent cargo locks on an aerial refueling tanker from coming undone midflight, officials said Tuesday.

Will Roper, the Air Force's top acquisition official, told Defense News he's confident the KC-46A Pegasus aerial refueling tanker's malfunctioning cargo locks will be fixed within months.

Sounds about right. If they approved of the fix, then it would take Boeing about a month to update the SOW and start releasing retrofit drawings. Then depending on if new parts need to be built or if COTS parts can be used (and the lead time needed to get the parts) it can take anywhere between one to 6 months (or longer).

Looks like Boeing is moving outside the standard for a solution to the remote camera issue but there will obviously be some additional work required to install on new builds and also retrofit to older aircraft. The solution isn’t expected to arrive anytime soon…

Boeing looks at laser-range finder for KC-46A refuelling boom

Boeing is researching adding a laser-range finder to the KC-46A Pegasus’ problem-plagued refuelling boom camera system.

The laser-range-finder retrofit onto the boom cameras, known as the remote vision system (RVS), would give operators additional information about the true distance between the end of the KC-46A’s boom and a receiving aircraft’s receptacle during in-flight refuelling, says Will Roper, assistant secretary of the US Air Force (USAF) for acquisition, technology and logistics at the Reagan National Defense Forum on 7 December.

“I am very pleased that Boeing has leaped forward on that kind of research,” says Roper. “They are looking at where they can install the laser-range finder, how they can run the wiring and cabling through it.”

The KC-46A in-flight refuelling tanker’s original RVS cameras had two problems: a distorted three-dimensional video feed which makes it difficult for operators to perceive distances; and a problem automatically adjusting to changing lighting conditions, which causes the screen to washout in certain scenarios.

This whole thing with the 767 tanker is a a fiasco starting from the begining. They should never have tried to squeeze every dollar by trying to bid the package out and made it political. They should have given it a longer time line to developed hardware.

That was why the P-8 program was successful. The selected the right airframe to perform the job but still have room for growth. Then implement incremental upgrade along the way.

Looking back, as a tax payer, I wished they would have went with the original 200 767F to start as it seems to be the right size frame. Then put in the necessary time line to developed and a upgrade the boom and all the other stuff along the way.

unfortunately? The 767F and the KC46 are not even close cousins. There are mods to the KC-46 that aren't even thought of in the 767F Starting with the windshields and ending with the refueling Boom. No telling how many differences exist between the 2 models.

You couldn't be more right. Just as stark are the differences between the KC-767 and KC-46. Sorta the same shell, but many of the important guts are completely different.

It's a shame Boeing couldn't use the outstanding vision system that Airbus uses on their KC-30s. I think that would've alleviated a great majority of their problems and I can't help but wonder why they didn't go that route.

Intellectual property. It is the same reason why Airbus is going to spend gobs of money developing their own MMA system on the A320 that may or may not be as good as the ones on the P-8A only to be hit by delays and will come years late. :splat:

L/N 1178 C/N 34141 B767-2LKC 18-46048 USAF KC-46A (VH048) Lot 4, #08/18, N1794B, tail 86048 has been delivered from Boeing Field (BFI) towards Mc Connell Afb (IAB) with callsign KAWW20 at December 20th 2019.

So a USA private firm is buying Cobham in the UK, I wonder if this is part of the fall out on the delayed refueling pods for the KC-46?
I read a few articles on the sale and none of them give any insight on why Cobham was a potential takeover victim. On the nationalistic front, people now are complaining about the UK government allowing the sale, no one seems to have a problem with the investors actually wanting to sell...

I would think this is unlikely considering how much of a presence they have in the overall aerial refueling market beyond just the KC-46's WASPs. Seems more like Advent just felt it was a good fit for them and Cobham's shareholders liked the price Advent was offering.
