Bereshit space ship crashed during landing

Thu Apr 11, 2019 8:04 pm

A short while ago, the Israeli space ship Bereshit, lost its main engine during the landing process on the moon. As a result the craft crashed on the moon surface with a velocity of 900 m per second.
This is a big disapointment for IAI, Space IL which initiated the project, and for Israel which lost the opportunity to become the 4th country to land a space ship on the moon.
It will take time to find out why the space craft crashed. However, minutes after the crash Israeli PM Netanyahu, who watched the landing in the control center in Yahud, declared that a new space craft will be built for a second attempt.

Well, they landed the spacecraft on the moon. Just scattered over a large area...

The scientific value of that lander has been criticized, because it has no thermal control and after a day the lander would be fried anyway.

But in all seriousness, if Bibi lands Bereshit on the moon and it contains Settlernauts, does the Moon belong to Israel?

PS- someone shood ban me till I’m sober tomorrow.

That's the [insert coins here] dollar question here.

Beresheet doesn't have thermal control anyway, so the probe would have been fried after a day on the moon. AFAIK it only carried two experiments - something to measure the moon's magnetic field, and a laser reflector.

The mission was basically planned to cash the Google Lunar X prize. In contrast, India has sent a probe to Mars orbit, for less money...

Same purpose and motivation for many of the advances in space exploration, national pride and prestige. I think it is great for them and hope more countries try the same. From what I saw it DID have thermal protection, did you see the excellent temperature control in the telemetry data for the computer and other components? The internal components stayed at between 20 and 23 C all the way.

That's not so difficult until the probe has actually landed. In orbit, even those cheap CubeSats survive long enough.

What spelling needs to be corrected? Bereshit is the first word of Genesis and that is its accepted transliteration. No worries. Spaceship could be one word though.

O hai grammar police I didn’t expect your graduation from the 6th grade until later. It’s a good thing you pointed it out too putting it into Google to confirm that yes this word from a foreign languages is spelled correctly would’ve been impractical. But hey it has a bad word in it, teehee!

SpaceIL... a group who had never built even a flight-test spacecraft... the results were remarkable

I suspect that IF they had built a test vehicle and subjected it for an extensive orbital duration in the Van Allen radiation belt.. and done propulsion and command systems reliability testing in space...there might have been a much higher probability of first-time landing success.

I think it's appropriate to 'factor-in' [established fact] that IAI actually built... and probably environmentally tested... the spacecraft. This was NOT a purely amateur adventure.
