President Trump Using 757?

Tue May 21, 2019 1:06 am

I just saw a picture of a speech by President Trump and it appeared he flew in on the MIGHTY 757 rather than the usual 747. It appeared to be located at a secondary airport, so perhaps the MIGHTY 757's superior field performance necessitated this equipment swap. Can anybody confirm? Does this happen often and simply does not make the news?

Happened here in STL too a while back on his tax cut/fundraising tour where he (ironically, now) stopped at Boeing.
Interesting how every thread is spammed with "bring back paid membership, there are too many spammers"

Generally speaking, if the airport isn't able to handle a 747, the 757 is going to get used.

I’m not sure why it would make the news? He’s flown it to Burke Lake Front airport while visiting downtown Cleveland last summer.

He's flown it in to Love Field also. I'd imagine the 757 is much less expensive to operate than the VC25.
When wasn't America great?

Williamsport, PA KIPT is my home airport. 6825x150. C-17s have been here. But why fly the 747 on a short hop from DC?

And don't forget the 757 can get off smaller runways, its got a big wing and a lot of power compared to the size of it. There
Was a reason it was used into places like Aspen when the 757 wasn't.

You mean the C-32... Presidents use the C-32 all the time, for a variety of reasons.

Do you mean the 757 versus the 747.

Also it was only in December when the first 737 landed in Aspen, but it is a popular aircraft in Vail for commercial airlines.

Note I said used to. When the higher thrust A319s and 737s with the short runway kit and more powerful engines became available it wasn't such an
issue. Also he would probably needed the space vs a 737 as he would have to bring both the advisors and the spooks along with him. It also could have worked better just for the rally. Get the thing in and out of there faster if something goes wrong.

So, in situations like this where the C-32s short field performance is preferred, is the VC-25 still somewhere nearby (at a more suitable airport) in case the proverbial shit hits the fan or do the C-32s have sufficient command and control capabilities to function as "the flying White House" if need be?

Short answer is no. The VC-25 isn’t nearby. There are other contingencies.

The President doesn’t use the C-40.

It’s probably a cost thing. The president is campaigning in Pennsylvania tonight. If incumbent presidents want to use VC-25 for campaigning, they must reimburse the government. I’m guessing that costs a lot more than opting to fly Trumo’s personal plane.

The Secret Service isn't going to let him fly on his personal plane, and as noted above, it doesn't have the required comm gear to fly POTUS. Campaigns don't reimburse the government for the full cost of using the VC-25 (or other government aircraft) for campaign purposes, from what I remember, it is along the lines of the value of a first class ticket for "political" passengers carried on board.

I'm not sure that's true. The DNC had to pay over $700k in reimbursements for campaign travel in AF1 in 2010.

Well he uses a 757 as his private AC.
