New Air Force One Scheme

Thu Jun 13, 2019 1:32 pm

Afternoon All,

Not sure if it has been posted yet or not, but I have stumbled across this from abc news showing 4 variations of the upcoming scheme to the new Air Force One.

Thoughts?

Should caviat this....suggests Trump designed them himself. So not sure how much sway the President will have here.

Not really original. Looks like the Japanese Air Force 747s to me. What’s wrong with the current livery? It’s pretty iconic.

Hard to tell what color the belly and engines are, but if that is dark blue it looks ok.

It's not bad, but doesn't hold a candle to the current livery, for which there is really no need to touch it. As everyone has said, it's iconic and I would add elegant...thanks to Jackie Kennedy.

Same color combination as his own 757. Guess that's why he wants to have it.
AB6 - A319 - A320 - A321 - A333 - A388 - AT42 - 733 - 734 - 735 - 73H - 738 - 752 - 753 - 763 - 772 - DC10 - MD83

His 757 is black and red. This has navy blue and red.

The current iconic livery is instantly recognizable the world over. Everything this man touches is indelibly soiled. Leave it alone!

Reminds me of British, a major downgrade from the current livery if you ask me.

When I saw the headline I was afraid of what I would see. But I actually don't think it's too bad. Perhaps a little gaudy, but could be an awful lot worse.

However, the current AF1 is elegant, sleek and instantly recognisable. Absolutely no need to touch it!

I’m not terribly impressed by that piece of paper but the current livery is so hopelessly dated that I would love to see it brought into this century. And have something a little more American than powder blue and teal. It looks like my Grandmother’s living room lamps.

Personally, I don't think it's awful on its own. However, I agree, compared to the current iconic scheme, I feel it is such a step down. Don't see the new proposed schemes being iconic in 30 years time

Good luck changing the livery to something so crass and gaudy, like Donny himself. The current livery is iconic and beautiful. It won't change.

Agreed. It's not terrible. I think it loks smart, but don't see it ever becoming iconic.

I love the current livery and color palette and doubt that will change,
but I do wonder if the belly of the 748I will be polished bare metal or
will that be painted over, either gray or silver paint ? .

It somewhat resembles the USAirways livery. However I do agree that the current AF 1 colors are so indelibly etched into everyone's mind worldwide that a change is unlikely.

I believe that Raymond Loewy’s very classy and iconic livery used for the presidential (and governmental) fleet will still be in use long after the current occupant is long gone and forgotten. To even suggest that a change is needed is ridiculous!

Not as bad as I expected but awfully U.S. Airish. Or this, given the name (no surprise?), but without the flag.....

Overall though, don't fix (or break) what isn't broken. The current one is iconic and shouldn't change.

Well, it could be a lot worse. But there's no reason to change from the existing, iconic livery. And depending how things shake out, I'll bet we might never see this on the actual new plane.

I for one quite like the change, the current baby blue is hideous and fails conjure up any images of the United States, Baby Blue is not one of Americas national colors so I look forward to this more subdued scheme, let's try and not conflate this administration with aesthetics

In the renderings in look as if it is a navy blue..it should be old glory blue to match the blue on the flag. I don't have a problem with him changing it. Congress already appropriated the money for the new planes and I think that's were their oversight ends. I believe any President can claim as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces they can decide the paint scheme of an aircraft as long as it was not a stipulation in the verbiage of the appropriations bill.

There are many other planes (757 and 737 variants for example) in the same current livery. Should the expense to repaint them be incurred as well, for consistency? After all, any plane that carries the president is considered Air Force One and the 747 isn't necessarily the only model used. There are plenty of decisions not in appropriations bills that are the responsibility of others in government service or agencies, not the President, for all sorts of technical, cost, or relevancy reasons to name a few. Be careful what you ask for. Frankly, the President - any President - should spend time on more important matters than a plane's paint job.

Couldn't they do it like an airline when they update their livery and do it when each aircraft is due for a re-paint anyhow? I am sure these planes need to be re-painted occasionally just like commercial aircraft.

Not sure I'm a huge fan of this one and I'm not a huge fan of the current livery either. I think the baby blue Jackie Kennedy color makes the planes look faded and from the 60s.

So at least this 80's style livery is more updated than the 60's style?? People complaining about 80's style don't realize what they're comparing against.

Anyways, I'd like to see something that remains subtle but exudes a bit more patriotism.

It isn't awful. But I think the current one is much better for what's essentially a diplomatic aircraft. There's no need to have something sharp and brash when something elegant and subdued will do. If anything it shows comfort and confidence in the POTUS as they don't have to fly around in something eye stabbing to show the strength of the US.

It does indeed look like a hybrid between the final TWA scheme and Trump's own helicopter paint. It isn't tacky, but is still hopelessly blown away by the iconic Raymond Loewy/ Jackie Kennedy scheme. A future president would look like they were stepping off of a charter. The House Armed Services Committee passed an amendment to the Defense Bill yesterday to restrict the paint and interior decorating choices for the planes.

I wish it had color on the hump and tail like the current one, but I wouldn’t mind it. If it's like a US Airways dark blue on the bottom, it would look really sharp.

Trump will not be President when this plane is delivered to the Air Force so I personally feel it should stay in the present livery.

Sounds very much like rumor.

From what I understand is that the original livery was going to be very much standard military. And JFK was convinced something less aggressive would suit an aircraft that would represent the US around the world. You know, peace and all that. So Jackie Kennedy worked with another designer and came up with what would evolve over the years into the current livery. Something striking and non aggressive.

EDIT:

Raymond Loewy was the designer.

Interesting that it looks like the original sketch included red and a darker blue. Before being tweaked to be the baby blue we're all familiar with.

This looks less interesting / elegant than the current scheme.

And shouldn't this topic be in polls and preferences given it is about a colour scheme only?
