Italians recover A2A missile during Police raid

Tue Jul 16, 2019 3:00 am

Well this is an unusual story. The individual arrested was apparently going to sell the A2A missile hopefully for almost half a million euros. As per the article the missile was a Super 530F and was the property of the Qatari Armed Forces being manufactured in 1980. Apparently it was missing the explosive warhead.

Italian arrests linked to neo-fascists after stash of weapons uncovered

Police in northern Italy have detained three men, including one linked to a neo-fascist Italian political party, after uncovering a huge stash of automatic weapons, material featuring Nazi symbols and a three-metre missile.

“During the operation, an air-to-air missile in perfect working order and used by the Qatari army was seized,” police said of the 245kg (540lb) Matra missile.
“This is a significant seizure, with few precedents in Italy,” said Turin police commissioner Giuseppe De Matteis.
The missile, 3.54 metres (more than 11ft) long was made in France and Del Bergiolo had been hoping to sell it for 470,000 euros (£423,000), according to Italian media reports.
The missile was “without explosive charge, but re-armable by people specialised in the field,” police said

Who buys single A2A missiles? And for what purpose?

On the other hand, the whereabouts of the 30 kg warhead might be more of a threat than the rest of the missile.

It would have made a great decoration for somebody's garden.
But it was a bit pricy.

Another article here about it:

The Super 530 is pretty useless without a Mirage F1 or 2000 behind it. As per the comments in the attached article, I suspect it is an inert round sold as a curio for personal collection.

One of the people connected to this affair has worked at RUAG, an armament and aerospace company belonging to the Swiss government.
