G7 in Biarritz: Can AF1 land there?

Wed Aug 07, 2019 2:30 pm

US President Trump will attend the G7 summit in Biarritz from August 24 on. I found a few articles in French about AF1 possibly not being able to go to BIQ because of its too short runway (2,250m/7,382ft). Landing wouldn't be a problem but taking off with full tanks would be. The article mentions how authorities are still thinking of a solution and looking at alternate options. The surrounding air bases don't have long enough runways, only BOD would be suitable but would require a helicopter transfer and closing the air space.

Question: could AF1 take off from BIQ and make a fuel stop on the way back to the US?

It could and has in the past on other trips where the destination airport didn’t allow for take-off. Probably Shannon. Or land at Mont de Marsan or Bordeaux and helicopter over.

The same goes for Japan, I guess, or other leaders with a widebody. Can BIQ host a number of large a/c?
Many happy landings, greetings from The Netherlands!

Well given that AF1 is whatever aircraft he is on then he can use a C-32 for this trip or at least a local last leg, of the trip leaving the VC-25 at a local USAF base
Must think up a new one soon, slow moving brain trying to get into gear ;)

How about Toulouse? It will be a final helicopter ride anywhere. Or Mont-de-Marsan french airbase?

The BA118 Mont-de-Marsan has a long enough runway (3,600m) but according to the article, not strong enough to withstand the weight of a 747.

TLS is a bit further East so maybe not as convenient as BOD.

LDE (Tarbes-Lourdes) is closer to Biarritz and could definitely work in terms of runway length (3,000m) but then there wouldn't be enough room for all the VIP jets to park during the summit as most ramp space is taken by stored wide bodies (A340, A380,etc.).

VIT is closer than BOD and mostly has cargo operations, so would probably be the least disruptive option.

BIQ and EAS can hold smaller biz jets without issue.

The summit being organized in France by French authorities, the airfields will have to be in France?

Not necessarity. Lough Erne had extensive security preparations in the Irish side of the border as well as the North.

GVA was the airport of choice on the Évian summit (which indeed has a small French sector, but the VIP terminals are all in the Swiss part, and the airport land and authority is fully Swiss so they did not land in French territory).
