Tanker refueling question

Tue Sep 03, 2019 7:25 pm

This may sound silly, but how are the tankers themselves refueled? Through the wing access ports as a usual airliner? Or are there ports with larger GPH throughput? I would think the AF would want the turn around tile to be as short as possible.

Thru the standard SPR port, most bases are on hydrant lines, so fairly quick—45 minutes.

If I remember correctly (definitely take this with a grain of salt), when we fueled KC-10’s, the could take fuel at right around 1000 gallons per minute. The KC-135’s were around 500-600 gpm. I’m thinking the KC-46 would be able to take around 1000 gpm, just like the 767.

The SPR for the KC-135R, and all other Mission C-135s is in the right main gear wheel well. The KC-135Ts have two SPRs, one in each main gear wheel well.
