Interceptors at Area 51 base?

Fri Sep 20, 2019 11:03 pm

I was just reading about the proposed "storming" of Area 51 and how well guarded the base is from ground intrusion. However if someone decided to fly into Area 51 are there fighter interceptors at the base that could intercept the trespassing party or parties?

Without getting into sensitive information....

You will be detected many miles away. Many miles. Before you can even see Groom Dry Lake. By air? "Area-51" is actually a grid reference on the Nellis Range. Should you choose to fly in, you might be able to land as I doubt Nellis jets would shoot you down....but....security would use force to apprehend you on the ground. Basically, you won't ever get near Groom without being detected. Considering there are active bombing ranges all throughout the area (I've been on them), you probably wouldn't want to risk it.

'Interceptors', or Air Defense Units, are strategically based around the perimeter of CONUS and Alaska, Hawaii manned mainly by the ANG. They investigate and react if necessary, to unidentified intrusions into our nations airspace. There are no Air Defense Units whose sole purpose is to investigate and react to intrusions into the restricted areas of the Nellis complex. However, an intrusion into the airspace around the white house may generate an Eastern seaboard ANG scramble to investigate a civilian plane that violates that airspace.

That being said, there is a lot of military aviation activity in the Nellis ranges and any fighter could be called upon to investigate a Joe Blueski who flies his Cessna into a restricted zone but not shoot him down as 'checksix' stated, even if the fighter was carrying live ordnance.

Not to mention the FAA put a TFR over Area 51 and the surrounding area.
You can take the boy away from aviation, but you can't take aviation out of the boy.
