Tu-154 flying low over Germany

Fri Nov 08, 2019 3:52 pm

Good evening to everyone!

As an aviation enthusiast, I very often look up to the skies almost immediately when hearing an aircraft, in order to enjoy the sound and sighted those majestic birds. Today however, this was a bit different.
At around 11:02am CET, I witnessed a Tu-154 flying very low over central Germany (about 2500-3000ft AGL, location: near Mörlenbach, Hesse). I was a bit surprised to see such a rare plane fly so low over my hometown, so I looked it up on flightradar24. Since I was in a hurry, I didn‘t have time to gather too much information, but what I found out was that the aircraft had departed from Cologne (EDDK/CGN). The destination was not known. I unfortunately forgot the aircraft‘s exact registration (RA-6????), but in the picture preview I could see that the airplane had a similar livery to Aeroflot‘s planes (which I found strange, since that airline has retired their Tu-154‘s already). So I assume that it was a military aircraft. A (low quality) picture is added in the attachments.

If anyone knows what exactly was going on, I would appreciate an answer! :)

Best regards.

Aumaverick is correct; you saw the Open Skies Tu-154 RA-85655, making pretty patterns over Germany at between 5,300 and 6,000 ft

What is equally curious is that at 08:30 CET today you could have seen two Tu-154s over Germany.
Whilst the Open Skies '655 was heading home, a second Russian AF Tu-154 was en route CKL-GVA, now currently routing south out of Geneva down thru' Italy.

It bears a remarkably similar registration RA-85155 but isn't an open skies a/c.

And there's more;
RA-85155 was originally an Aeroflot Tu-154B-1 seen below with Samara titles in 1996.
The a/c currently airborne over Italy is a different ( second) RA-85155, new in 2010, a Tu-154M, the 1,000th off the production line.
I wish they wouldn't do that..... :lol:

Nothing to see here; move along please.
