Just reading the article and looks like a wing takeoff or landing gone wrong. Reportedly 2 pilots killed.

Looking at KOCO video, I’d agree, but guess form landing, just past the “captain’s bars” on the runway. The one in the dirt is upside down.

Two nickels on the grass...

During training, would the students fly in formation with other planes, including take off/landing in formation?

I don't want to guess too much, but looks like they almost collided and one tried to avoid?

Yes, all the time; it’s not possible to fly formation without other planes. T-38s are formation and instrument school. You did lots of formation including 2-ship, 4-ship; 2-ship formation take-offs were standard procedure. Form landings came late in program. On another forum, it’s reported to be a formation landing, reservist IP and reservist UPT student.

When I was stationed at KRND as an IP pilot training instructor, we would do formation touch and go's. So any T-38 instructor should have been very proficient in formation T/O and Landing procedures.

Hello all,
It’s sad to see this and hear that two Air Force pilots were killed. I remember watching a show on the T-38 and the training of pilots. Usually it’s a student and an instructor that are both in the aircraft. Having the aircraft inverted will be a question for the mishap board.
Condolences to the deceased families and friends/co workers...
