Report on near-crash of Luftwaffe Global 5000

Tue Nov 26, 2019 9:10 pm

Seven months after a Global 5000 nearly crashed in Berlin Schönefeld, the authorities have shared the (conclusion of) the accident investigation. I didn't find an original thread, so here's a new one.

The aircraft became nearly uncontrollable once airborne, which lead to a dive over 1100 m (~ 3500 ft) and structural stresses over 5.8 g, as well as both wingtips striking the ground during landing. This was the result of a single piece of control hardware that was erroneously installed opposite to its designed orientation. Lufthansa Technik, the majority owner of LBAS, apologised for the mistake and assured that it would not happen again.

There is a thread in the Civil Aviation forum about the near-crash.

According to the latest FAZ.net article (in German), this is still being assessed. Anyway Germany has ordered three new Global 6000 jets, the first of which has already been delivered.

Thanks. Looked in the wrong forum I guess.

"Der Spiegel" maintains their position that it's a write-off, based on an assessment by Bombardier.

"Der Spiegel" includes more details from the report. Contributing causes within LBAS / Lufthansa Technik were "high workload and stress, unclear responsibilities, irregular work interruptions and lack of internal oversight." Doesn't sound like the "oopsie" LH Technik portrays it as. It also notes that the pilots should have been more thorough in their pre-flight check (no visual confirmation of spoiler/aileron movement), and that they should have spent more time to analyse the problem and get familiar with the changed behaviour before attempting the landing.

The full report will likely not be published.

Oh boy, not a good reaction, PR wise. This is like a kid who steals a candy, not a reaction of a near-fatal accident with a millions worth of aircraft.
Many happy landings, greetings from The Netherlands!
