DARPA requests $13 million to build a flying machine gun

Wed Feb 26, 2020 1:38 am

DARPA's 2021 budget requests an allocation of $13 million for a new program to develop "an air-launched tactical range missile system capable of multi-mission support."

Dubbed 'Gunslinger,' the novel weapons system "will utilize the high maneuverability of a missile system coupled with a gun system capable of scalable effects and engagement of multiple targets" for missions that include counterinsurgency operations, close air support, and air-to-air engagement.

As The War Zone rightfully points out, a missile combined with a gun system can best be described as an "unmanned flying gun," one with the ability to loiter above potential targets before engaging.

Seems far fetched to me. Missiles fly very fast.

So this in a slightly larger size? For $13 mil? I'll do it!

:checkmark:
No need for a gun if you already go fast. A small guided projectile will do.

Isn't that what the A-10 is for? :wink2:

Sounds more a drone carrying a gun.

A swarm of machine gun drones could be very effective support in close range combat ops.

Just get between the target and where you want to go next and make it a tail gun. No need to waste the bullet reaction.

GalaxyFlier had the right idea but seems to be some misconceptions still present, at least assuming it’s like other developments. I would also guess it’s probably a small drone armed with an adapted common weapon like the Ak-47-armed drone Kalashnikov showed off a few years ago. This would really be more a flying version of some similarly armed terrestrial drones, but with better flexibility.

Why not a remote controlled AC27J Spartan Gunship? Load the thing up with Gatling guns
Jumped out of: C130H, C130J, C17A, C212, CH47, and UH60. Bucket list: C160, A400, C2

That’s literally what I thought. As well as the AC130.
