MiG 25 Foxbat operators

Fri Aug 21, 2020 12:49 am

Who still uses the MiG 25 Foxbat in 2020. Cause I know Algeria still fly them but I not to sure on any other. Libya hasn't used any during the civil war leading me to believe they have been retired. Syria hasn't used any MiG 25 Foxbats since the beginning of the war and they look like there in storage. There's also a single Mig 25 present at Dollyar Air Base in Azerbaijan and at Shirak Airport in Armenia. Also, do Russia and Kazakhstan keep there MiG 25 Foxbats in storage/reserve? And is it true that North Korea might still use the MiG 25?

I think India has moved to satellite surveillance instead of the foxbats for some time now.

Russian are in storage/reserve from what I know, but not used. Plenty of MiG31, plus modernised MiG31's in service.

I think the Gromov Research Institute has a specially configured aircraft testbed in service.

Only Algeria still uses some. Russian ones stopped flying in 2013. Syria/Libya both stopped before the wars. Azeri and Armenian probably at least 10+ years ago. North Korea never had MiG-25s.

With all these former operators, I wish one of them would donate a set of wings to the Air Force museum’s that they found buried in the Iraqi desert..maybe throw in an old TU-95 for the right price too!

I've done my research and that appears to be true. A very specialised MiG 25PU trainer. I've also found out that the Sukhoi KnAAPO facility still fly 2 ex Soviet Sukhoi SU-17 Fitters and the MiGremont aircraft repair plant in Ukraine still fly at least 1 SU-17UM3 "77 Yellow" in Ukrainian Air Force colours.

Sounds like it's about time for them to start hitting the jet warbird circuit... :duck:

Both the LII Gromov MiG-25PU and the KnAAPO Su-17s are no longer flying either, and haven't been for several years now.

I believe that there is 1 KnAAPO SU-17UM3 still flying just rarely flies but I'm not sure about the second. It's a shame the MiGremont MiG 25PU-SOTN isn't flying anymore though but KnAAPO definitely still fly at least one SU-17UM3, both are still present on site.

Out of curiosity, how do you assess which aircraft have been used by Syria during their civil war? Is there some sort of "spotter" website reporting all the jets observed in the Syrian sky?

You are right, both Su-17 are present, but they don't fly. This was discussed on the Russian aviation forums/websites some time ago. By the way, one of those two Su-17 was on display at the "Army-2020" expo held at Komsomolsk-on-Amur / Dzemgi a few weeks ago.

You can piece it together from various sources. The account "Luftwaffe AS" on Twitter is really good, down to tracking individual serial numbers.

Thanks for telling me that. Do you know what there even used if they don't fly?

What else is in the Russian Air Force emergency war reserve?
I have been told there are MiG 23/27, SU-15, TU-22 and MiG 25 but I'd like some clarification, plus if there are any types in the reserve status
