"HALO1" and "HALO2" routing SMX-TUL today

Tue Sep 01, 2020 10:19 pm

Checking flightaware at home this morning, I saw two aircraft, both labeled as Gulfstream IIs, outbound from SMX (Santa Maria CA) within an hour of one another, identified as HALO1 and HALO2. It seems they were making a round trip from Tulsa. They made me curious - both because the G-II isn't that common anymore, and because of the unusual call signs. Anyone know more about these?

This may be a bit of a stretch: https://henney.com/chm/callsign.htm

They have HALO 04 listed as a G2 owned by L3 Communications which happens to have a hangar at KTUL. The old Airborne Ballistic Missile test target aircraft has been sitting derelict here for several years near their ramp (as well as other places around the airport), I'm sure they have other projects that are probably still needing flight testing.

Vandenberg Air Force base nearby SMX is scheduled to launch a test missile later tonight.

The military departments have long gotten rid of the GIIIs, I don’t think they had GIIs.

Military Defense Agency has two G-II, N74A and N178B (HALO1 and HALO2).

Thx.

I'm assuming you meant Missile, not Military :)

That coupled with the post above about the GII owned by the MDA makes sense.

What’s unbelievable is they’re still flying 2 GIIs.

If this is for Vandenberg, why can’t they land on the Base? Why land in Santa Maria and then drive 20min south to the Base? I grew up in the area, (in Lompoc). So, I do know how far everything is from Lompoc.

The base may not have suitable parking for them. They might prefer to just park at the FBO at SMX.

Also, this morning VBG was reporting just 1/8 Mile visibility while SMX is reporting 3/4 Mile. SMX, considering it is a commercial airport likely has better ILS.

One thing they have at Vandenburg is space.

Both of them have ILS RVR mins of 2,400'.

Well, then if that 1/8 mi visibility was expected to hold that would mean VBG would be closed while SMX was open.

However, it appears these aircraft also flew TUL-SMX-TUL on Aug 31/Sept 1 so for whatever reason,it seems they prefer to use SMX.

Yes, Vandenberg itself is very large and the runway is long but the ramp is actually very small for the size of the facility.

The RVR is the controlling factor regardless of the prevailing visibility. I don't remember from my military ATC days as that was long before most of you were born :bouncy: though I don't believe military fields would be considered closed, more so below landing minimums which may have a different impact to military a/c than it would to civil or airline mins.

Wasn’t a problem parking a C-5 there. Now Ames-Dryden at Edwards was a problem.
