Is this a standard C-130H? (Wyoming ANG)

Mon Sep 07, 2020 10:55 am

Photographers Choice for today has me puzzled.

It is a beautiful evening shot of a Wyoming ANG C-130H, equipped with MAFFS (Modular Airborne Fire Fighting System).
However MAFFS is mostly an internal unit within the aircraft, where the fire retardant exits the aircraft through one of the aft doorways.
So what is with all the lumps & bumps on this particular C-130? it's listed here on A.net as a standard "C-130H"
But I've seen less paraphernalia attached to your average EC- or MC-130.

Without giving too much sensitive information away (I dare say the Russians & Chinese know it all already), any pointers as to why this "airlift squadron" has this bird with enough capability to change the channels on my TV from over 1,000 miles away?

Or is it just the unusual camera angle, and this stuff is all standard on every bread-and-butter C-130H? :scratchchin:

p.s. the MAFF discharge pipe can just be seen below the aircraft, somewhat like a backward facing...... well you know what it looks like. ;)
Nothing to see here; move along please.

Appears to be a plain jane C-130 that has been modified to support LAIRCM, an anti IR missile system.

I don’t see the laser turret though. I’d suggest to you that LAIRCM has been removed while aircraft is in its fire fighting role. The portions that are removable anyway.

Quick search turned up this,

https://www.ang.af.mil/Media/Article-Di ... oming-ang/

There are H1, H2, H3 versions, so that might be a factor, too.
