Plan to go to Mars in 1966

Mon Sep 28, 2020 8:30 pm

I found this link in a mars form and it is pretty fascination. Man, the ambition of the 50's, 60's space engineers was pretty amazing. I know they tested a nuclear rocket so maybe it was for this trip.

A pity that politics got in the way of science & advancement.

1966 wasn't all that different. Not all that much has changed in 2020.

Also in 1966 NASA had to produce a steady stream of eye candy in order to be able to argue for their funding.

In 1966 the Apollo program had run into massive budget overruns, and it seemed like it would only become worse over the next few years. Glorious talk about the "next steps" after Apollo was one way to divert the attention away from the fact that the Apollo Moon men were very expensive substitutes for robottic shovels to pick up some Moon dirt and bring it back to Earth.

Apollo was a fabolous project, and no force on Earth would have been able to put me to bed on 20 July 1969 at 4 a.m. (Central European Time) when Neil A. made that famous jump live on TV and said those famous words.

Anyway, over the following fifty years I have often been dreaming what science might have been done for the same money, if Apollo had been done pilotless. But it is waste of time to think about that, because if Apollo had been done without those smiling astronauts on TV, then the govt money wouldn't have been there to spend.
