Determining Factor for JHMCS Wear

Simple question here: What determines when a pilot wears a JHMCS helmet versus just a standard HGU-55? I've seen photos of F-15/16/18/22 etc. where pilots are wearing both, but with the F-35, it seems the Lightning II's version of the JHMCS is always worn. Is it a mission specific requirement when the helmet is worn, or is it the aircraft type and systems that determine which version of the helmet is worn?

F-35 has no HUD. So the pilot always has to wear the HMDS.

Other aircraft, particularly in peacetime, can probably do without it, unless the training for the day specifically requires it.

Just to clarify, the HGU-55 is worn all the time as JHMCS is fitted to the HGU-55. Generally the determiner is day versus night ops. JHMCS isn't really viable to use at night. For night missions aircrew will wear the HGU-55 with an NVG attachment.

The F-35 helmet displays the NVG imagery onto the visor so no need for the separate NVGs. This is a significant advantage for night missions and to some degrees makes the F-35 the first fighter that could realistically conduct WVR manoeuvres at night.

The other advantage the F-35 helmet has is its weight distribution. Both JHMCS and wearing NVGs with the HGU-55 are not optimally positioned so the wearer has additional stress on their head/neck when pulling G's. The F-35 has that weight better distributed across the whole helmet so while the weight is still there it isn't as uncomfortable.

Lastly when wearing NVGs the procedure is to rip them off your head before ejection while JHMCS and F-35 helmet both exit with you.
