Turkey wants to land on moon, launch astronauts, build spaceport

Thu Feb 11, 2021 3:06 pm

As announced by Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan yesterday, the Turkish space agency (TUA) has been given a mandate to expand their capabilities within the next 10 years.

Stated goals are, among others:
  • A turkish robotic lander on the moon by 2023
  • Turkish astronauts in space
  • Building a spaceport (likely not on Turkish soil, though, due to geographical constraints)
  • A new launch vehicle (supposedly with hybrid propulsion)
  • A regional positioning satellite system
  • "more sophisticated satellites"

The perfect distraction, this article says it all : https://www.middleeasteye.net/big-story ... c-downfall
Operating a twin over the ocean, you're always one engine failure from a total emergency.

The astronauts will receive a bombastic heroes' welcome back on Earth for making the ultimate sacrifice...
Reading accident reports is what calms me down

Regardless of who is announcing it, I think the targets are good and reasonable for Turkey.

1. Hard landing on the moon by 2023
Probably SpaceX will be used to reach Earth Orbit and an indigenous Turkish made Hybrid rocket will be used to reach to the moon. It is similar to Luna-2 mission of USSR back in 1959. Turkish Authorities believe that Turkey's hybrid rocket technology is ahead of its peers and this will be a good opportunity to market it.
2. Establishing a Turkish Positioning System
It is no secret that Turkey is experiencing many difficulties when using GPS for abroad operations. You can see on Turkish Drone footages that "GPS Signal is lost" info although they are carried out successfully (I think they are kept in the footages intentionally). Nowadays anybody can interfere the GPS (remember RQ-170 incident over Iran). Turkey wants to get rid of this handicap.
3. Soft landing on the moon by 2028
This is the most challenging target. Turkey wants to achieve this with its own rockets all the way. We will know more about it after target-1 is achieved.

I think India can be good role model for Turkey. Turkey should avoid expensive fancy targets and follow the foot steps of India.
The future is in the skies.

I thought you were joking, but he's actually planning to build a launch pad in Somalia ...

Why Somalia, of all places.

I was also surprised by this because this country has a doubtful reputation; however, its location explains everything. As you know, the best location for a spaceport is the equator. It lets spacecraft take the most out of the rotational energy of Earth. So, why not save fuel when there's a possibility to do it. I suppose that the aim overlaps all disadvantages of Somalia and, as we all know, space agencies are ready for everything to save money.

Rotational energy, plenty of cheap land over the Indian Ocean away from significant air routes, easily securable.

Basically like Kourou.

Yet virtually inaccessible for civilian engineers and workers and with a poor quality of life. If you told me to go work in Somalia, I'd have to decide very carefully whether it's worth it. Obviously military personnel don't get to choose but rocket (and especially satellite) engineers are usually civilians.

Kenya and Ethiopia, on the other hand, are fairly easy to travel to and don't require constant military protection when you're off-base.

I doubt the Turks will care. They'll build a big compound, they'll fly in the employees and you'll live there and like it. Depending on where you are in Ethiopia or Kenya, significant armed escort is truly warranted.

The largest Turkish embassy in the world is in Mogadishu, the Turks are very invested in training the Somali National Army and there are significant Turkish economic interests throughout Somalia. This might not happen tomorrow, and it won't be Kourou or KSC or Baikonur, but as a proof on concept, it could possibly happen.

Somalia is a failed state so it's easy to bribe the right persons to buy anything there.

Bombing the Moon, I'm not sure it shows you in a good light, though, they might rethink that first mission.
