KC-135 boom info required please

Tue Mar 23, 2021 9:18 pm

Hello all,

As an untrained civvie (I believe your affectionate term is FNG) who has gone a bit crazy, I have decided to come to the best place I can and ask for help, and please don't say "get a gun and shoot yourself in the foot".
I'm looking for as many dimensions as possible for the KC-135 boom as I'm making a telescopic boom for a KC-33/KC-747 in 1/144scale. I know that the KC-747s for Iran used KC-135 booms. I also know the retracted and extended lengths and that the outer tube is 8.5 inches in diameter but I have no info for dimensions on the housing for the boom or the inner tube or the size of the ruddevators.
Any help will be gratefully received, whether it be pics, PDFs, pointing to a website etc, or even advice telling me to make a KC-10 or KC-46 boom instead as that is what would be installed now.
You can ssee my work over here;

Oh, I'm planning on a European 1 based wraparound camo scheme BTW.

Many thanks in advance

I like the manual that was on the britmodeller website. Good info, except missing that inner tube diameter.

It might be tough to model. The outer tube would be 59 mils in 1/144. You might be limited to what brass rod selection you can get to find something that is close. It's also not a true cylinder, but has flares as per the excellent pictures in your thread. Hate to say it but buying a KC-135 kit might just be the most reliable way to get it.

You could be right smithbs.
Would I be right in thinking that if (and I know that it's a big if) the USAF did buy a new KC-33 that they would get a new design boom and not just use the old design boom from the KC-135?

I take it that info on the AAR booms is top secret and you'd have to kill me after telling me anything about them

I'd assume there are rather detailed photos around?

with some dimensions in the images known it should be reasonable easy to make a good guess
on other measures. good enough for modeling?

used to have quite some fun with paper models like those from "Wilhemshavener Modellbaubögen"

The inner tube of the KC-135 Boom is 4.1" in diameter. It gets as wide as 6" at the ball socket just before the nozzle.

With export control reform, certain info may not fall under ITAR regulations any more.

You will still go to jail, but you would be charged by the Department of Commerce and not Department of State.
