The USAF has begun converting used KC-135s into a new tactical attack airframe. Basically, a replacement for the A-10.
"We have so many spare KC-135s, we wanted to find a use for all these old airframes. And 42 years of flying the tanker role have convinced us the wings can do 6G", said airman Lissa Engles, project head. "And it can carry WAY more than an A-10. Lots more!".
The conversion involves installing 12 pylons per wing to carry tactical ordinance, and an ejection seat for the pilot. Some cockpit rearrangment was necessary to convert the KC-135 (dual pilot) into the A-135 (single pilot on the centerline) configuration.
Trials begin today, April 1st.
