Germany retired the Bell UH-1D

Sat Apr 17, 2021 12:38 pm

A few days ago in April 2021, Germany finally retired the Bell UH-1D after 50 (!) years of Service.

In reality it was a licence built UH-1H but since the agreement said UH-1D the letter was kept.

In the last years the roles were reduced. The last mission was the ICAO SAR task to search for crashed planes. Rarely if required it was used in other missions. This year it finally was replaced.

Even the Minister of Defence attended in the farewell ceremony.

Bye bye "Teppichklopfer"

Where I live, the Hueys from Niederstetten were the only rescue helicopters equipped with a winch. Whenever I heard the flap-flap-flap above me, I knew a climber or paraglider was in trouble in the nearby mountains.

Farewell paint scheme last year:

And the designated replacement in the SAR role, the H145M:

I expect the H145 to serve them well, it's a very proven yet modern platform.

Against the backdrop of Lieutenant Colonel Bill Kilgore yelling, "I love the smell of napalm in the morning!" ;-)
