On ADS-B exchange you can see that it started the same day from Gibraltar towards North Africa, where there's little to no ADS-B coverage at all. It becomes visible again when it's close enough to ADS-B receivers in Sardinia. FlightAware ADS-B Coverage Map

Good chance it had been down to Mali and back as part of Op Newcombe (MINUSMA is the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation mission in Mali. Op Newcombe is the UK commitment to that mission). Not a lot of ADS-B coverage in that area!

The first contact was near Corsica/Sardinia, so Mali seems more likely than Malta.
