USS Midway Museum question

Sat Jun 05, 2021 3:59 am

I was looking at a picture of the Midway and I noticed at least one of her aircraft elevators appeared to be in the fully down position

Anyone know If these can still be raised and lowered ?

Actually, I live in SD, and I think it can be raised and lowered. On some special events, I think they clear the flight deck, and the only way they're doing that is by using the elevators.

I believe at least 1 elevator is operational, new aircraft are lifted by crane onto the deck, but there are a lot of aircraft and vehicle movements between the hanger and flight decks.

It may be worth contacting the museum, https://www.midway.org It's been a decade since I have been aboard, visited 3 times over the years. The volunteers are amazing, hearing from someone that actually set up the planes for the catapult the dog bone link, the signals and the essential close coordination. The Midway is one of the best ship & / or aviation museums I have visited.
