Wouldn't it make more sense to buy more Rafales? At 400million a pop, it seems quite expensive to add another system to your fleet.

More Rafales seems a better idea than F-15 to me, too. Why the interest in F-15? Range?

The Qatari solution previously perfected by the Malaysians, buy from different political blocks to ensure you have at least one type that works when you need it. It also provides Indonesia some, probably meager, level of political influence in the respective countries.

I don't think Indonesia has the money to duplicate training, equipment, spares, weapons etc costs involved in playing such games. When it came to paying their dues on the KF-X project I seem to recall they tried to persuade SK to take Indonesian-built transport aircraft in part payment. Last year they agreed a revised deal with some 'payments' to be made in kind.

They operate both Flankers and F-16s... Whether they operate them well is debateable.

Could easily see them operating Rafales and F-15EX both in limited numbers, no chance they will get to 36 Rafales. Priority always seems to be new stuff against keeping the existing stuff in service.

According to La Tribune, the first payment for the first batch of 6 Rafale has been paid to Dassault Aviation. Indonesia is the 7th foreign Rafale customer after Egypt, Qatar, India, Greece, Croatia, and the UAE.

This from La Tribune in July

Le ministre de la Défense indonésien rencontre des difficultés pour financer les nombreux contrats qu'il a signé avec la France mais aussi l'Italie et la Grande-Bretagne.

What does that mean in English? Indonesia is buying stuff left, right and centre without having the money to pay for it. Perhaps the strategy is to make the first payment on a contract then to try to make the supplier accept late payment on further scheduled payments.

(paywalled article

If Indonesia hasn't got the cash to pay for the kit it is ordering, how is it going to pay for the KF-21's it should be ordering in the future?

Anyway, well done Dassault in getting the first payment and getting the deal on the road.

Confirmation of the second batch of Rafale for Indonesia: 18 aircraft, in addition to the earlier batch of 6, with the last 18 expected to be confirmed by year's end.
