Belgian F16 collides with air base building (pilot ejected)

Thu Jul 01, 2021 9:23 am

Today a Belgian F16 collided with a building at Leeuwarden air base (in the Netherlands) while taxiing. The pilot ejected and was injured, one person inside the building was also injured. Apparently there was no fire or explosion.

Engine spooled up unexpectedly, aircraft started rolling towards a building, pilot pulled out in time.

If a pilot ejects, does the eject sequence disable and cut the engine?

Apparently, the crew chief was also injured. The pilot injured his leg and is treated in hospital.

I can hear the talk now. "We have one fewer F16 and will be just fine. I guess we can cut one from our order of F35s and save some money".

I was going by Wiki. They claim that Belgium will buy 34 F35s. This article also states the same.

'Cornfield bomber' famously recovered from a spin after the pilot had ejected and gently landed in a snow covered field with the engine still running after it had come to a halt.

Or the MiG-23 that flew without a pilot from North-central Poland to Belgium, killing one 18yo when it landed in a house.
