Really cool. Thanks for sharing.

I'm sure if the guy is a routine spotter he's looked into this, but I wouldn't even think to "Google the air base's phone number and call them." How do you even explain that to whoever picks up the phone? haha

A long way from me here at LHR but I know from airshows at RAF Mildenhall in the 80's and going to others like Lakenheath outside of airshows, there was/is a community of regulars at these bases, I remember one being interviewed by the news at his favourite spot in the build up to the 1991 Gulf War, due to his knowledge of the various types based there, being deployed and their significance.

Here's what happens when less seasoned enthusiasts get a bit too close;

What exactly is going on there? It's like something ablating away. Crazy.

Best story at the Half Moon tonight by a long shot. I just hope that pub is better than the beer.

CAMRA says the Half Moon in Lakenheath has been closed for years.

Shedding turbine blades or parts. I picked up an Eagle at Lakenheath years ago that had an engine explode as the take-off roll started. There must have been a hundred holes in the aft fuselage and rudders. Broken down down, parts on pallets off to Robins for repairs. A year or so later, I’m picking or dropping off a C-5 to the depot, parked right next to it, hundred or so patches, all put together for acceptance flights.

As an aside the F15-E in question has at least 2 AIM? Sidewinders and what appears to be jamming/countermeasure pods as well, pardon my igonorance but why would a USAF strike aircraft be carrying such a load for what was presumably a training sortie over the UK?

Captive AIM-9, not armed unless it was on QRA, which is unlikely, as that’s an RAF tasking. Targeting or ECM Pods are used for training, too.

What is it about drama and military pilots? 100% credit for "saving his life," yet doesn't even know what was wrong with the airplane, what was found in the ground.

Come on, you can’t let facts get in the way of a good story !

Maybe it was the reporter...I wasn't there so I am only guessing, but it makes sense that the pilot was saying that IF his life was in danger, the spotter 100% saved his life because he was unaware of the danger...still I know I'm reaching with that one. Cool story though.

He's lucky it was a dark grey: at least he got a timely thank you and some acknowledgment afterwards. A light grey pilot would've told him he had everything under control and he knew he was shitting blades the whole time. After their requisite 6-9 hour debrief, of course.
