Kabul airport damage

Thu Sep 09, 2021 10:16 pm

I just read that navigation aids at Kabul HKIA were damaged when US forces withdrew:

"The Taliban has blamed the Americans for delays in letting people fly out, and said that as U.S. forces left last week, they rendered the radar and other equipment at the Kabul airport inoperable. Engineers from Qatar, alongside workers from Turkey, have been working to repair the damage and to come up with a security protocol to enable international passenger flights to resume." (https://www.nytimes.com/live/2021/09/09 ... -americans)

Does anyone know what specifically was damaged? Is the speculation that this was to slow Taliban use of the facility? or some other reason?

A Qatar Airways evacuation flight left Kabul for Doha yesterday.

If it did happen, NAVAIDS damaged at HKIA, it would have been on orders from the White House.
Then again, HKIA was not known for maintaining their NAVAIDS, runways, taxiways, or ramps.
If US Forces did do it, they would have completely destroyed the equipment, not merely damage it so it could be repaired.

I could see them doing a simple (enough) disabling to prevent any "hostiles" that may have gained immediate access to the tower after they left from providing route information to parties en-route armed with shoulder AA systems.

With 20/20 hind sight, I proposed any damage may be just random mayhem of the evacuation. The US still rely on a working airport to evacuate the remaining people. Damaging the infrastructure just delay the needed flights.
