Air Force 1 at DEN

Tue Sep 14, 2021 11:37 pm

Hello! Today, President Biden visited Colorado and Air Force One landed at DIA. Does anyone know why DIA was chosen despite the fact that there are closer military bases such as Buckley AFB in Aurora? It seems in my opinion that landing at a base would not only be more secure but would logistically make more sense. For instance, when presidents have visited regions like the Bay Area, they typically land at Moffett Federal Airfield (NASA installation, formally NAS Moffett) or they land at Travis AFB in Fairfield.

Probably has a lot to do with the VIP's itinerary once on the ground - just during the Obama administration, AF1 landed at LAX, LGB, and SLI on different occasions, while then-VP Biden took AF2 to SNA at least once.

It's probably due the itinerary, maybe there is a certain image they want to project by going to a particular airport. The President lands at such and such airport and gets good media coverage possibly.

Um, no. It’s not to project an image and they get media coverage whether they land at a civilian or military airport. They land at a facility that can accommodate their security and operational needs.

FYI KDEN is known in local media as DIA - Denver Intl Airport

Also Buckley AFB is the old name - it currently is Buckley SFB (Space Force Base).

Buckley should be good enough for AF1 - C5s use it to pick up satellites from Lockheed Martin there.

Looking at https://www.airnav.com/airport/KBKF there are a lot of restrictions on large jets.
FOUR ENG ACFT TAXI WITH INBOARD ENG ONLY PRIOR TO DEP/AFTER LDG FOR FOD CTL.

LARGE/HVY ACFT REQ U-TURN ON RWY, MAKE LEFT TURNS AT RWY END ON THE CONCRETE PORTION.

Might not be the best place for a VC-25A, the backup plane?, plus how ever many C-17s are needed to support.

I know the VC-25 has been to Buckley before, and when Air Force One is in town at DIA ive been told an E-4 normally comes into Colorado Springs

Ramp space. Buckley has a difficult time supporting more than 1 or 2 large aircraft at a time. The thing to remember is that when AF1 travels, it's got an entourage. Usually multiple C-17s, helicopters, V-22s, etc. Perhaps the spare VC-25, too, but not always. Long story short is that ramp space is the one thing most needed for a visit by the POTUS and it's the one thing Buckley just doesn't have. I've been there in the KC-10 and although it wasn't sporty, it certainly wasn't expansive. Moffett and Travis, otoh, have tons of ramp space. Even Peterson isn't very roomy. Unless you're a C-130 or similar.

Explains why I saw a C17 at the FBO on Sunday in DEN.
