I found this The Drive War Zone article about a venerable F-104 aircraft that can go Mach 2 and is being offered with support. It's probably cheaper than a supercar and goes faster...

Well, vastly more expensive than super car once you fill the tanks or need something worked on. And the chance to kill yourself about equal to said super car. Remember the old joke, “an optimist is a F-104 who quit smoking Camels”.

Oh, I'm going to need to remember that one.

Would go to any airshow this thing was booked at, though.

The joke always referred to Luftwaffe F-104 Pilot, but in fact other services had higher crash rates.

If you turn on the audio of the 1980s vhs tape quality embedded video (see linked article in first post) of the restored F-104 first US registered flight .... (a) why so loud .. was that typical levels heard from the front given the GPU is disconnected but audio levels were high even after that (b) why so many walking moves by the ground crew going to and from each side and then some activity all around the aircraft after startup ... Am puzzled as to what they were actually looking for while directed all in a circle looking at the plane from a distance, with a crew chief discussing with the cockpit open to the pilots? Was there chance of any leaks or something?

Don't recall seeing this on the flight line at various events for jet fighters.

If you do buy the 104, don’t try this at home.
