What is your favourite military aircraft of the world war 2 era ?

For me it's the Northrop N-3PB floatplane. A super cool plane.

The Northrop N-3PB of No. 330 (Norwegian) Squadron, RAF. The Squadron was formed at Reykjavik, Iceland on 25 April 1941 from Norwegian personnel who had managed to escape from Norway and then undergone training in Canada. They initially flew with RAF Sunderland crews but in May aircraft ordered by the Norwegian government prior to the German invasion arrived in the form of Northrop N-3PB seaplanes. The Squadron was attached to Coastal Command and operated from bases in Iceland and Scotland, tasked mainly with anti-submarine patrols.
The Northrop N-3PB Nomad was a single-engined American floatplane of the 1940s. Northrop developed the N-3PB as an export model based on the earlier Northrop A-17 design. A total of 24 were purchased by Norway, but were not delivered until after the Fall of Norway during the Second World War. Exiled Norwegian forces used them from 1941, operating from Iceland, for convoy escort, anti-submarine patrols, and training purposes from "Little Norway" in Canada. Within two years of delivery, the design was effectively obsolete in its combat role, and the remaining N-3PBs were replaced by larger aircraft in 1943.

The only surviving and restored example is at the Norwegian Armed Forces Aircraft Collection in Norway:

The wreck was found submerged in a frozen lake in Iceland. Between 1980 and 1981 it was beautifully restored to a pristine condition in Hawthorne, California, by veteran employees of Northrop. Many of them had worked on the N-3PB when all 24 were built for Norway in 1940-41.

The P-38 is the only aircraft I would want to be in during WW2. Impossible to defeat in the hands of a good pilot. The speed and climb rate was exceptional.

My favorite is also the P38. As to which one I'd like to own, it would be the PBY Catalina. Fly it up to some remote Canadian lake, open up one of the blisters, and throw a fishing lure out...heaven!

Having built Airfix model planes a many, the Spitfire is to me the most interesting aircraft due to the rounded wing tips, followed by the four engine Avro Lancaster, due to the impressive structure and turrets and stuff. I always thought the props were huge (13 ft dia. ?) and the single wheel landing gear huge as well. To make that model as good as I could make it took me some time. Now looking at it after these years .. it was a true gunship and bomber wasn't it?

Hawker Hurricane for me, the Spitfire had the 'flash', but the Hurricane was the true workhorse in the battle of Britain. In the Pacific the P-38 is my favorite, a great example how a better plane can dominate the field, the impossible to defeat noted above.

A multi role, fast, easy to make with non strategic materials and dispersed production, fast as in comparable to contemporary piston engine fighters but a bomb load of a B-17, adapted from original fast bomber and reconnaissance, to pathfinder, radar equipped night fighter, fast specialized transport, in the anti shipping role it’s bombs, wing mounted rockets and 20mm cannon was as destructive as a broadside from a Cruiser, the most productive recce aircraft of the war.

Particularly good at very low level precision bombing, for say vital enemy factories surrounded by housing in occupied nations, or prisons to enable mass escapes, the right part of a building where for example the Gestapo were housed, even to ‘interrupt’ propaganda broadcasts in Berlin by Goering and Goebbles.

All helped by being also less detectable on radar, admittedly a by product of it’s construction rather than design goal.

Sounds very modern in many ways, of course it’s the DH Mosquito.

The Mosquito, for sure. A true great for its era and one of the best bombers ever made, as well as being tremendous at many other roles.

What stood out for you in the original photo details? Good catch.

The air cooled engine and fake exhaust tips. The access panel right above the fake exhaust will be familiar to any Cessna Bugsmasher pilot.

By type:

Ground attack: IL-2
Fighter: tie between the P-51, Yak-3, Yak-9, and MiG-3
Bomber: B-17 with B-25 very close behind
Transport: C-47
Utility/liaison: L-4

I've had the pleasure of seeing airworthy B-17, B-25, C-47, L-4, and P-51 in person, along with the P-47 and TBM Avenger

Should someone notify the A.net database that this is not a real Spitfire? I don't know how those things work.

For me there is only one WW2 airplane, the North American P-51D Mustang, and I had the opportunity to get a ride on a 2 seat model.

Back in 1975 when I was working as a mechanic for a repair station at HPN, (White Plains NY), the repair station where I worked at the time occasionally would have a P-51 belonging to a local flying club primarily made up of airline pilots and based at Oxford Airport, Connecticut in for some maintenance.

One of our mechanics was well versed in P-51’s so he would do the maintenance. This mechanic also was a laid off airline pilot, but not a club member and was checked out on P-51’s so after the maintenance was done he would fly the airplane back to Oxford and arranged for a friend who owned a Cessna 172 to fly up to Oxford and pick him up and return him back to HPN and he let me ride with him on one of his flights back to Oxford in the P-51.

Unfortunately about 6 months later one of the club members was doing some acrobatics over Martha’s Vineyard and stalled the airplane and it went into a flat spin and he did not have enough altitude to recover and crashed and he was fatally injured.

All I can say it was an awesome experience in my one and only ride in a P-51. It’s hard to believe this was 46 years ago but I still vividly remember it, especially the barrel rolls over Danbury.

I crew and work maintenance on a 1943 Grumman TBM-3E Avenger which we fly around to air shows / events around the east coast, so naturally I should say it's her...

Besides that though, it would have to be the F7F Tigercat, as it's just an insane sexy beast. Besides that, it would probably be the F8F Bearcat... I mean it set a time-to-climb record in 1943 which stood for a decade (when there was INCREDIBLE advancements in aviation/powerplant design!) It averaged 6,400fpm to 10,000ft; an un-modified production piston aircraft 78 years ago! The plane that ended up taking the record was a jet..

My choices actually have nothing to do with them all being Grumman or carrier-based, I just think they're unique and would be wonderful aircraft to operate - though arguably they were very late-war designs. Neither saw combat but were ordered/designed/developed and first flew before the war was over.

Ground attack: Il-2, but a 2-seat version. And NOT in the gunner's seat.
Single engine fighter: between Thunderbolt and La-5
Multi-engine bomber: B-17, probably Pe-8 too (just for the sake of having a chance of making it home)
