UK Government A321

Thu Apr 14, 2022 9:59 am

Perhaps this was flagged somewhere else. If so, I missed it.

The UK government is flying - as of a couple of weeks ago - an A321neo. The configuration is C52 Y12. The colour scheme matches the A330 Voyager.

They have two aircraft leased from Titan G-XATW and G-GBNI; they have had them about a year now, I think its a two-year deal. However G-XATW was done most of the Cabinet Office flying whilst G-GBNI has spent most of that time in an all white scheme and has appeared in several places where, to the best of my knowledge, there has been no Government minister. Was it on some sort of trade mission or was it sub-chartered to another organisation?

I saw the plane at Bordeaux last October where it was being prepared. I understand it was used by Priti Patel to fly to Rwanda.

I rather like the livery. Gets the message out there to any TV cameras or journalists that may be present, in a way that standard RAF grey does not

G-GBNI has recently been painted in the full scheme as per G-XATW at Southend

It was regarding her visit where I saw it on the BBC or Guardian.

In recent days G-XATW has been repainted into all-black livery as it was before the UK Government colours.

The Union Jack never fails to impress but I hate the snake on the fuselage.

The livery a direct ripoff of the French scheme and that gold font is aweful its don’t work and makes a graphic designer cringe

Its also hypocrisy of the Boris loving media that he has now three transports , None actually fit for purpose I might add with barely a word or critique on the expense whilst prior leaders of both parties were frequently castigated for the mentioning the concept. Indeed it’s pretty hysterical of members of THIS forum that would state the same platitudes

I'm impressed G-GBNI had the legs for LAX-STN! Has an A321neo gone further?

Why embarrassing? It clearly identify the country, and, while not fancy, I find it much better than some airlines'.

I mean the plane is loaded nowhere close to typical airline payloads. You can probably find similar lengths on ferry or delivery flights.

Am I right to understand XATW has been destickered and returned to the Titan luxury leasing business now no doubt at taxpayer expense?
The level of profligate spending by this administration is shocking

There are also two Dassult Falcon 900LX which will be brought in to replace the four BAE146. https://www.airforce-technology.com/new ... lt-falcon/

I can't understand comments suggesting the UK shouldn't have VIP aircraft, all the other G7 countries operate multiple aircraft, including dedicated 777,747 etc. At least the UK A330 is also used as a tanker transport and the A321 leased rather than purchased.

I don't have a problem with the UK Government using VIP aircraft, but the livery is pretty terrible. Something simpler and more refined would be better for a government aircraft IMO.
I do have a problem with them doing things like flying Boris to Cornwall for an environmental conference, and as other commenters have mentioned, the right wing press have been crowing a very different tune about these aircraft than what they were when previous PMs have suggested them.

The subject aircraft.....wonder if G-GBNI has the same C52 and Y12 configuration or a more 'luxurious' layout? :scratchchin:

Well, there's a couple of chances to remedy that now. Just remove the model designation on the vertical stab, and the stripes, and replace those with the Union Jack - then change the registration on the engines as required.

Incidentally, there was a piece in Simple Flying about a Legacy 650 flying HM into NHT for the Platinum Jubilee having to go around due to a lightning storm. The report has since been pulled out. Is the Envoy IV above not inducted yet into RAF service...or was its interior configuration deemed unfit for Royalty

An A321 sized aircraft seem practical for most government missions and even TATL with a few ACT's.

I foresee A321XLR's variants increasingly becoming popular in this role in the future. Functional, efficient and less pompous, bombastic than WB's.

The livery isn't very good but it works a lot better on the A321 than the A330.

A TwoTwenty sans ACT may even be practical for London-New York with a leaner delegation.....

Considering all the media fuss the Sussexes recently generated crossing the pond - reportedly in a Citation XLS and a Global 6000 back - the Envoy IV above makes a reasonable compromise were it not for their Green advocacy. However, they seem to have forfeited their access to it - and flying westbound, the Falcon 900LX would be beyond its 4,750nm advertised outer limit. :airplane:

For the 900LX, the corporate scheme in #23 provides an anonymous livery without being plain or boring. That is, if no Union Jack and 32 Sq registration appear on the tail and engine! :shhh:
